2.3. Инфинитив в функции части именного составного сказуемого

RULE

Инфинитив в функции части именного составного сказуемого используется после форм глагола to be. Если в качестве подлежащего в предложении выступают следующие слова: aim, object, task, purpose, function, mission, plan, difficulty, problem и др., то сказуемое переводится на русский язык следующими тремя способами: Заключается в том, чтобы… Состоит в том, чтобы… – The aim of this work is to repair the diesel engine. Цель этой работы заключается в том, чтобы отремонтировать дизельный двигатель. Цель этой работы состоит в том, чтобы отремонтировать дизельный двигатель. Цель этой работы – отремонтировать дизельный двигатель. В остальных случаях глагол to be является эквивалентом модального сказуемого: The engineer is to test all the pumps. Инженер должен проверить все насосы.
