airbridge - a short corridor to link the departure building with the air¬craft door.
air waybill - the only airline document required for carriage of cargo by air, it is a private contract of carriage between the shipper and the air¬line.
alternate - an alternative airport that has been nomunated for landing if the aircraft is unable to land at its scheduled destination because of weather conditions or technical reasons. АТС - Air Traffic Control
АТС congestion - this occurs when the controllers have too many aircraft wanting to take off at the same time, it may be the result of aircraft having had to wait for adverse weather conditions to clear. The congestion can also occur in the air when too many aircraft want to land and have to circle awaiting АТС clearance for landing.
baggage allowance - the limit on the amount of free baggage passengers can take with them on scheduled services; the allowance is 30 kgs for each first-class passenger and 20 kgs for tourist or economy class passen¬gers.
baggage tag - an individually numbered baggage label for each piece of a passenger's baggage, it bears a three-letter destination code, it is tied to the piece of baggage and the tag of the label, which has the label's individual identification number repeated on it, is torn off and handled to the passenger. The tags are stapled to the passenger's ticket or ticket wallet so that they won't be lost. When the passenger claims his baggage at the destination he can prove it belongs to him by the tag, boarding announcement - information for passengers made over the public address system that they can proceed to board their aircraft. The announcement is made visually on closed-circuit TV screens and Information boards, boarding card - the "pass" given to passengers during check-in that allows them on to the aircraft, it states the exact seat allocated to the passenger, booking - reserving a seat on a flight.
ground receptionist - normally a woman staff member of an airline to assist passengers at the terminal or at the airport.
hand baggage - luggage of small size carried into the cabin by the passenger.
Larger luggage is placed in the baggage hold.
hijack - to compel a pilot by force or threat to change his route.
hire - car - car made available to a licensed driver on payment of a hiring fee and a deposit. A passenger may request it booking his travel.
hotel reservation - booking of accommodation in a hotel at the passenger's destination, it can be arranged by the airline upon request. IDG form - Instructions for the Despatch of Goods form; it's recognized by airlines as an instruction for the shipping of goods and invoicing for carriage; a formal letter from the consignor giving all ne¬cessary details is also recognized.
IT - inclusive tour - a holiday offer that for one payment includes return air travel and accommodation and meals at a special hotel
import register - record kept at an airline cargo unit of all consignments received from incoming flights.
international health certificate – certificate, recognized by all countries, it's proof of a passengers' vaccinations and inoculations.
itenerary - a passenger's planned programme from the start of his travels until arrival home again.
jumbo jet - a popular name For the 360-seat Boeing 747 jetliner.
life jacket - inflatable safety device to support a person In the sea if an aircraft is forced to come down over water. It is a requirement that there shall be one for every passenger in ocean-crossing aircraft.
long-haul - routes of thousands of miles, or airlines that operate long routes.
manual system - reservations or load control systems where-all the documentation is done by hand, as opposed to a system where this work is carri¬ed out by computer.
on schedule - flight that arrive- or departs at the time shown in the time¬table or schedule.
open-dated - ticket where all travel after the initial flight is not yet reserved by the passenger, though the itenerary is specified in the ticket and paid for. The passenger will make the necessary reservations when convenient to him.
origin - point at which a passenger's journey starts or where the carria¬ge by air of cargo begins.
oxygen mask - a device to breathe oxygen in an emergency.
package - name given to cover a number of separate travel elements brought together to provide one trip (inclusive tour package or package holiday).
pallet - a platform upon which cargo is stacked and then kept in place by a net; the pallet with its load is lifted as a single unit into the aircraft cargo hold for transportation.
passenger officer - a Sonior airline official at a station or air termi¬nal responsible for handling of passengers.
Passport Control - check point operate by Immigration officials control¬ling; and inspecting all incoming aliens and everyone leaving country, pressurization - provision of air supply within the aircraft passenger cabin and flight deck at a constant pressure irrespective of the height of the aircraft.
public address system - method by which information, messages or instruc¬tions can be relayed by one person to a large number of members of the public by means of a microphone and loudspeakers.
reservations unit - airline offices in which passengers' bookings are arranged and validated.
restricted cargo - cargo which is dangerous; radio-active, explosive, corro¬sive materials.
routeing - the route from the start of a journey to the destination with intermediate stops included.
scheduled service - flights operated to a regular frequency, timing and routeing, which is published in a public timetable.
seatbelt - a restraining belt, fitted to each aircraft seat to prevent in¬jury in severe air turbulence.
security check - an inspection of baggage and of passengers themselves , before boarding an aircraft to ensure that hijackers, firearms or explosi¬ves do not get on board the aircraft.
service - a flight or series of flights over a number of sectors between the place of origin and the farthest destination, operated on a regular schedule.
short-haul - routes that have frequent stops short distances apart; or airlines that operate such routes.
signal - message sent by radio or along telegragh wires.
stop off - break in a journey in which a passenger leaves the airport and later resumes his journey on a subsequent service or flight.
station staff - airline ground staff who are responsible for passengers, cargo and aircraft handling,
tarmac - aircraft parking area.
technical stop - an airport stop at which no passengers or cargo are set down or taken on board, usually a re-fuelling stop.
Timetable - document that sets out times of departure and arrival at va¬rious destinations of aircraft on regular services.
travel documents - papers essential for travel, such as passports, tickets, health certificates, etc.
travel now - pay later (fly now-pay later) - form of payment whereby passenger pays for a part of his fare at the time he travels and pays the rest plus interest in a number of agreed instalments.
trip - a journey ,usually a journey including the return travel, valid passport - passport legally issued, not cancelled or time-expired and authorizing travel to the country-in question.
youth fare - a special fare operating between certain countries that is available only to young people.
