10 Features peculiar to the British

Almost every nation has a reputation of some kind. The French are supposed to be amorous, vigorous; the Germans are dull, formal, fond of military uniforms and military parades; the Americans are boastful, energetic and vulgar. The English are cold and reserved. There are certain types of behavior, manners and customs which are peculiar to the British. Let's see some of them.

  1. English people tend to be rather conservative. It means that they are very suspicious of anything that is new. Sometimes they are even hostile towards the introduction of something new and unknown into their lives. For example, when central heating was installed, English people still continued to use old-style fireplaces. It is even said that the English are the enemies of progress.

  2. Englishman does not talk freely about himself or easily disclose his intimate thoughts.

  3. The English are a nation of stay-at-homes. "There's no place like home", they say. "The Englishman's home is his castle" is a famous saying. English people don't like flats, they prefer small houses, perhaps with a tiny garden.

  4. The English really like gardening. They grow flowers and carefully learn the Latin names of the flowers they grow.

  5. The English are practical and realistic. They have no romantic delusions.

  6. English people are the world's greatest tea-drinkers. They drink a quarter of all the tea grown in the world each year. Many of them drink it about eight times a day.

There are two kinds of tea. "Afternoon tea" that takes place between three-thirty and four-thirty and "high tea" that is between five-thirty and six-thirty.

The English usually drink tea with milk.

  1. Englishmen are fond of plain food. They eat beefsteak chop, roast beef, fried fish and potato chips. As to English breakfast, it is usually the biggest meal of the day, which traditionally consists of cornflakes with milk and sugar, fried bacon and eggs, marmalade on a toast and tea or coffee.

  2. Pub is a place where the English go for company and conversation. Nearly everyone here drinks beer, which is actually a country's national drink.

  3. The English are great lovers of competitive sports. The game associated with England is cricket. Other popular games are football (or soccer), rugby football (or rugger), golf, horse racing, tennis.

  4. England is a man's country. Oxford and Cambridge keep to the traditional ratio of one woman to ten men.
