g) Отрицательная форма общих вопросов с глаголом “to be”:

  1. Специальные вопросы с глаголом “to be”.

We usually make general questions by changing the word order: we put the verb “be” before the subject. “It is a viper” can be transformed into the general question like this “Is it a viper?” To make a question-word question, it is necessary to place a question word before the general question: What is it? ~ It`s a viper.

e.g. Where is my camera?

Who is there?

Why are you here?

If it is a question to a subject, we substitute the subject with a question word:

- I am a lecturer. ~Who is a lecturer?

Notes: 1). “What, Which, Whose” can be followed by a noun:

What size is yours?

What colour is the pencil? ~ The pencil is red.

Which coat is yours?

Whose picture is this?

Which/What newspaper are you buying?

What kind of book is this? ~ It is a good book.

What kind of man is he? ~ He`s a kind man.

2). “How” can be followed by an adjective or an adverb:

How big is your house?

How fast is your car?

Who+be…?

3). Be careful with “Who, What, Which” questions. If “Who, What, Which” is the subject of the sentence, the word order is

Who+be+S…?

If “Who, What, Which” is the object of sentence, the word order -
