Us Government

The United States of America (referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, the States, or America) is a federal constitutional republic. It is headed by the President. He is elected every four years.

The US Constitution establishes three branches for the federal government. The legislative power is vested in Congress consisting of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Senate has 100 senators (2 from each state) elected for a term of 6 years. The House of Representatives includes representatives from each state elected for a two-year term. The number of representatives from each state depends on its population. There are 435 representatives in the House. The executive power belongs to the President (as its head), the Vice President and the Cabinet. The President must appoint the members of the Cabinet called Secretaries. They are in charge of the executive department. Among 15 executive departments are the Department of State, Treasury Department, Department of Defense, Department of Justice and others. The judicial branch of the US government is represented by the system of federal and state courts.

The second level of government is state government. Each state has its own government including a governor (an elected chief executive), a legislative assembly, judiciary represented by a system of state courts. Each state has its own constitution and laws, but all fifty states must respect federal laws and State constitution must be in compliance with the US Constitution. The states have responsibilities for establishing education systems and police departments, building roads, healthcare, welfare, environmental protection.

The third level of government is local government. Local governments receive a charter (plan of government) from the state government. Typically each state has at least two separate tiers: county and municipality. Counties are usually governed by an elected board of supervisors, county commission, or county council. In some counties, there is a county mayor or a county executive. Counties provide courts, public utilities, hospitals, public health services, roads, parks, law enforcement, and jails. There are several types of municipal government: city, town, borough, and village. A municipality is typically governed by a mayor and a city or municipal council responsible for urban planning, economic developments, sanitation (sewer and refuse), police, fire, utilities (electricity, gas), tax collection.
