Using the passive
1. The Passive: general
a) We often use the passive when we say what happens to the subject. We usually don’t know who or what does something, when we are not interested in who or what does something:
▪ My car was stolen last night.
▪ The factory was painted during the war.
▪ Sarah has been invited to the party.
b) The ways of translating the passive sentences into Russian:
▪ The poem was written when she was only seventeen. (Это стихотворение было написано, когда ей было всего 17.)
▪ He said that the house was being built rather far from the centre. (Он сказал, что дом строится довольно далеко от центра.)
▪ I have never been told about it. (Мне никогда об этом не говорили.)
▪ It was observed that the trees stopped developing leaves. (Было замечено, что листья на деревьях перестали распускаться.)
▪ When they returned they were followed by a young man. (Когда они вернулись, за ними следовал какой-то молодой человек.)
