WHAT IS ACCOUNTING

Accounting is frequently called the “the language of business” because of its ability to communicate financial information about an organization. Various parties such as managers and owners of both large and small profit-making orga­nizations use accounting information to answer important questions. Are profits sufficient? Should selling prices be increased or decreased? How many workers should be employed? Should different or additional prod­ucts be sold? Should additional or different services be provided to cus­tomers? Should the size of a business be increased or decreased?

Persons responsible for non-profit organizations also need accounting information as the basis for making decisions. Non-profit organizations, such as churches, social clubs, and city governments, must keep spending within money available.

Business managers and owners need good financial information to make good business decisions. Orderly records of a business' financial activities are called accounting records. Planning, keeping, analyzing, and inter­preting financial records is called accounting.

Inaccurate accounting records often contribute to business failure and bankruptcy. Failure to understand accounting information can result in poor business decisions for either profit or non-profit businesses and orga­nizations. Accounting training helps managers and owners make better business decisions,

Accounting—the language of business

Accounting is the language of business. Owners, managers, and ac­counting workers must understand and use this basic language. Salesclerks and general office clerks complete accounting forms and prepare account­ing reports. Secretaries take dictation using basic accounting terms. All of these workers do their jobs better if they know accounting terms and understand accounting practices.

Accounting in everyday life

Many persons use accounting as a means of earning a living. All persons can use accounting in personal financial activities.

A lot of people in Ukraine must submit personal income tax reports. Everyone must plan ways to keep spending within available income. Per­sons with some knowledge of basic accounting are better able to plan and keep adequate personal records.
