Jetties

The term «jetty» covers structures «thrown out» or built out into deep water from the shore. It is generally used as distinct from wharves and quays which are constructed along the shore.

Jetties are constructed in basins and in tidal waters. The name «jetty» is also applied to the structures in harbours which combine the duties of providing accommodation for loading and discharging with those of a breakwater.

Jetties may be either solid structures consisting of an enclosure formed by some kind of wall filled in with earth, or they may be piled structures.

Task 1: Read the text and answer to the following questions

Retaining walls

Modern retaining walls are constructed with a continuous wall of steel sheet piling in front of which the water is either already enough for the channel desired or is dredged to the required depth after the steel sheet piling is driven. A system of wales, tie backs, anchors is constructed and a fill is made back of this wall.

The problem resolves itself into a study of the following:

1. Depth to which steel sheet pilling should be driven

2. Line of support of the piling at the bottom.

3. Bending strength of the steel sheet piling of resist the lateral loads due to the till with a surcharge load it the latter is contemplated

4. Size of wades and tie rods (or tie backs).
