Ilyichevsk

A new shipping port has been built on the Black Sea Coast of the Soviet Union. It is quite a modern deep water sea port situated some kilometers from Odessa. It is called Ilyichevsk.

Ilyichevsk coming into being is due to the expansion of the national economy of the USSR and the growth of Soviet trade contacts with foreign countries.

The new port has a big water area free from ice all the year round; it is well-sheltered from prevailing winds and has a well-developed network of railways and trunk roads nearby. The construction of the port began in 1957. Now deep-sea vessels can freely be accommodated at the berths. The berths are equipped with modem stevedoring machinery including portal and floating cranes of 100 tons capacity, fork-lift trucks, and elevators and so on.

The volume of cargoes handled at the port of Ilyichevsk has grown remarkably in recent years. The port handles coal, ores, pig iron, rubber, tea, general cargo, etc. A lot of construction work is to be carried out according to the new plan.

Now many ships call at the port of llyichevsk. They come from Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, the UAR, the GDR, the FRG, Japan, Great Britain, France, Italy, Norway, Turkey, Cuba and many other countries.

Breakwaters

A breakwater is a kind of a barrier from which wave reflection takes place. When the wave approaches the breakwater, part of energy is absorbed by the structure and part is reflected seaward in the form of reflected waves. Incoming and reflected waves will combine. IT the incoming wave front is parallel to the breakwater, either a partial or a complete capotes will be formed depending upon the coefficient of reflection of the breakwater.

If the incoming wave front is oblique to the breakwater, a typical criss-cross pattern of waves will be formed. In all cases the reflection increases the wave height, the load exerted against the breakwater, the danger of the breakwater being overtopped. Navigation becomes difficult.

Therefore, there are different types of breakwater: with sloping and vertical walls, with solid and perforated walls, with discontinuous walls, all this depending upon the depth of water basin, the height and length of waves and upon the practical consideration for the purpose of economy.
