Task 1: Read the text and answer to the following questions

Shipping ports

Port is a place where ships may ride secure from storms. Sea port is a port on the seashore accessible to seagoing vessels.

In commerce the word «port» denotes a place to which vessel may resort discharging or receiving their cargoes. In this sense it primarily refers to a harbor, but may be used to denote any place to and from which merchandise may be shipped. It may include the entire geographical harbor with its approaches and inlets, or a contemplated place in a geographical place.

From the very earliest understanding of the term, a harbor was a sheltered arm of the sea in which vessels could be built and launched and taken for repair, or seek refuge in time of storm.

Natural harbours are those which are usable without resort to engineering works of improvement. Primitive harbours were almost always of this character. With the increase of size and draught of vessels, most of so-called natural harbours have required works of extension and improvement. A natural harbor may now be considered as one

located on an estuary or an enclosed bay. Natural harbours require only such facilities as docks and piers, and sometimes deepening by artificial means to make them, serviceable as shipping ports.

Artificial harbours are those requiring construction of extensive engineering works, such as breakwaters for protecting the shipping from wave action, or harbours in which shallow areas have been excavated and deepened and other improvements made in order to make them available for the purpose intended. There are harbours possessing partial natural shelter improved by artificial means, and harbours entirely or almost entirely of an artificial nature built on an open sea coast.

Task 1: Read the text and answer to the following questions

On port developing policy

Ports, as everybody knows, are points of transshipment between traffic by sea and by land. They should be planned therefore with an equal degree of consideration for the safety and convenience of vessels as for proper handling of cargo and passengers.

Large and expensive modern vessels when culling at a port are looking not only for a place where they can safely lie, but also for means of discharging their cargoes and loading export goods with greatest possible efficiency and speed. They also expect that the proper care and protection will be given to their goods when loaded, discharged, or stored awaiting shipment. Therefore, a port should be a large functional unit with maritime works, facilities on land and access roads, forming equally important parts of one efficient transporting system.

Planning of a modern port requires a sufficient knowledge of civil engineering techniques in the field of maritime construction.

  1. What do you know about ports?

  2. Where should they be planned?

  3. What do the vessels usually do when they call at port?

Task 2 Translate the words
