I. In Ancient China there was a belief that the natural environment of a particular location can influence the fortune of its inhabitants and descendants. The Chinese created the notion of feng shui ("wind-water"), which developed from observation of chronic catas-trophies wrought in China by winds and floods. Originally they developed it as a means of planning the perfect agricultural system in harmony with the forces of nature. Feng Shui has been used for centuries to improve the physical surroundings in which people live and to maintain balance in their life.

II. The Chinese art of Feng Shui has been adopted by modern designers as a way of creating environments which feel comfortable and harmonious. The principles of Feng Shui are beneficial in the organization of outdoor environments and can also be used in the design of areas inside the house such as the bedroom, which is considered to be the most important room in the house.

III. Finding the best position for the bed is very important. The main rule of bed positioning is never to have the foot of the bed directly facing the door. That is what is known as the 'death position'. Traditionally, the dead were laid out with their feet pointing towards the door to give them better access to heaven. (It also made it easier for the living to carry them out.) Ideally, you should position the bed diagonally opposite the door, with the head against the wall, not a window.

IV. Small tables on both sides (not just one side) at the head of the bed help maintain balance, but it is best to avoid cluttering the room with a lot of furniture. Let air flow easily through the space. Those large heavy wooden wardrobes, often with boxes of suitcases stored on top, are a really bad idea. As they tower over the bed, they can make the sleeper feel vulnerable and cause a restless sleep. Do not position tables or other furniture with pointed edges facing the sleeper as their negative energy will cause health problems.

V. The bedroom should be kept as a relaxing space and should not be used for work or as an office. There should be a feeling of lightness, not seriousness, in the air. Blue curtains and bedcovers are more soothing than brown ones. Soft natural materials are recommended. With Feng Shui in your bedroom, you can create a peaceful sanctuary from the stresses of contemporary living.

I. It is staggering to think that Heathrow Airport, which is now almost a self-contained city with a population of 60,000 workers, started life as small grass airfield. It was initially privately owned by the Fairy Company and used mostly for test flying. London's commercial flights took off from nearby Heston. World War II changed the course of Heathrow's history. In 1944 it was decided that Heathrow should be developed as a major transport base for the Royal Air Force. It was never to be. Before the work was completed, the war ended, and thus there came the prospect of a huge expansion in civil aviation.

II. London needed a large airport with modern equipment and the partly-built site at Heathrow was ideal. One runway was ready for use, and when the Ministry of Civil Aviation took it over in 1946 a tented terminal was quickly put in place and a new chapter began. As air traffic boomed, the airport found itself with an ever-increasing demand for passenger facilities. By the mid-1950s, restaurants, cafes and shops had attached themselves to the airport.

III.Next there came the new Oceanic terminal handling long-haul carriers, a function it still performs as Terminal 3. It was followed by Terminal 1 in 1968. Increased congestion in the central area led to the construction of Terminal 4 in 1986 on the south side of the airport, a modern facility but an inconvenient 10-20 minute transfer from the

heart of Heathrow.

IV. The pressures on London's principal airport keep mounting. The extension of the city rail link to the airport central area is now open. Nowadays Heathrow is fighting hard to build yet another passenger terminal in the face of local objections. In fact, by the early 1960s, aircraft noise in the vicinity of most large urban airports had become a major problem.

V. The cause of the problem was a rapidly increasing number of aircraft movements and the introduction of the first generation of turbojet aircraft with low climb performance, such as the early models of the Boeing 707. That resulted in public objections to the planned expansion of most urban airports. London was no exception. Such objections held up the expansion of Heathrow Airport for many years. Ultimately, noise curfew was introduced at Heathrow Airport. Yet there are many more problems to be solved in the future.

A41. The article does not say anything about

  1. the construction of terminals at Heathrow.

  2. the facilities introduced at Heathrow.

  3. the work of traffic controllers at Heathrow.

A42. The turning point in the airport's history was

  1. the decision made during World War II.

  2. the establishment of the Fairy Company.

A43. The airport grew rapidly because

  1. the central area was not equipped adequately.

  2. air-traffic increased on a large scale.

  3. at the beginning it was partly-built.

A44. One can make a conclusion that a passenger

  1. can reach London from Heathrow rather quickly.

  2. can get only limited access to transportation.

  3. can hardly get to London with great difficulty.

A45. It is clear that the local population
