What is happening to the landscape of the traditional British high street these days? As more and more retail outlets are moving to the out-of-town shopping malls gaps are left in our once thriving streets. It's a sad sight to see boarded up shop fronts where grocers, butchers, hardware merchants and bakers once thrived. But hang on a moment, what is this that I see moving in to take their place? Charity Shops!
In my very own pleasant middle class suburb, in recent years we have said good bye to an excellent confectionary only to say hello to some brand new research centre, and watch as a butcher metamorphosed into a 'Help the Aged' shop.
Can this be a good thing, our local necessities being replaced by do-gooders? Well in some ways yes because charity shops fulfill two very important needs in modern society. As the economy booms, house prices soar and people get rich they need to throw out their old stuff and replace it with something new. But as society gets polarized, some people get poorer and they need to stretch their limited budgets and buy the second-hand goods that others have disposed of and this is where charity shops come in.
Let's say you are a poor student, you have little money but need a new outfit to attract a new boy or girlfriend at the Student Union party that you are going to at the weekend. All you need to do is pop along to your local charity shop and buy, for just a few pounds, that fancy accessory that somebody else has become bored with. All this can be done at a fraction of the price of a new item and will often be of a better quality.
V. What if you are no longer a poor student but have some money and have moved into a new flat? Do you really want all that old rubbish that you have accumulated over the years? No of course not but somebody might and it's not that bad. Why not take it round to the charity shop and get rid of it. You feel virtuous for giving to others and you get rid of unwanted things at the same time!

Research has shown that a love of reading is more important for children's educational success than their families' socio-economic status or wealth. Yet, research also shows that young people's enjoyment of reading may be declining.
Recently, various studies have explored young people's attitudes towards reading, their reading preferences, and what would motivate them to read more. The data for one study was based on 1512 pupils from three primary, one middle school and two secondary schools in England who participated in a survey during spring 2005.
The majority of pupils enjoyed reading quite a lot or very much; girls were significantly more likely to enjoy reading than boys. Most pupils showed positive attitudes towards reading, with the majority agreeing that reading is fun and important. However, a minority of boys and secondary pupils believed that reading is boring and that they cannot find books that interest them. Boys were also more likely to believe that reading is for girls. Overall, pupils with positive attitudes towards reading tended to enjoy reading more.
Pupils said they enjoy a wide range of reading materials, with magazines, text messages and websites being the most popular. However, there were significant differences in preferred reading materials dependent on age and gender. Girls were more likely to read magazines, fiction, text messages and emails, while boys were more likely to read websites, newspapers, graphic novels and comics. Secondary pupils were significantly more likely to read websites, newspapers and magazines, while primary pupils enjoyed reading jokes, non-fiction books and fiction.
Almost half the pupils enjoyed reading fiction. When specifically asked what types of fiction they preferred, adventure, comedy and horror/ghost stories came out as their favourites. Girls were more likely to read romance books, animal-related stories and poetry, while boys were more likely to read science -fiction, comedy and crime/detective stories. Significant age differences also emerged with primary pupils more likely to read adventure stories, horror/ghost stories and animal-related stories, and secondary pupils more likely to read comedy and realistic teenage fiction.
