Text 6 Airport Tests Passenger Eye Ids
Task I. Study the following words:
iris – радужная оболочка (глаза);
to be unveiled – быть впервые примененным;
to store on computer – хранить в компьютере;
on arrival – по прибытии;
to gauge passenger reaction – оценивать реакцию пассажиров.
Read the text to describe a new hi-tech identity system.
Heathrow Airport is testing a new hi-tech identity system which examines a
passenger’s eye, rather than their passport as they go through immigration control.
Heathrow is the first UK airport to carry out a large-scale trial of the iris recognition technology, which was unveiled at the airport last Friday.
The aim is to speed up the movement of passengers through the terminal and
detect illegal immigrants.
A total of 2,000 passengers who frequently fly from North America to
Heathrow on Virgin and British Airways flights are taking part in the five-month
trial.
Each passenger will have an image of one of their eye’s iris stored on
computer. Instead of showing their passport on arrival they will go into a kiosk
where in seconds a camera will check that the pattern of their iris matches
computer records. If so a barrier will automatically open.
The trial will test the technology and gauge passenger reaction.
Task II. Answer the questions.
What is Heathrow Airport testing?
What does a new hi-tech identity system examine?
What is the aim of the new system?
Task III. Rewrite the sentences below translating the Russian parts into English.
Heathrow is the first UK airport to carry out a large-scale trial of the идентификация по радужной оболочке глаза technology.
The aim is to speed up the пассажиропоток through the terminal and
detect нелегальные иммигранты.
Вместо of showing their passport по прибытии passengers will go into a kiosk where in seconds a камера will check that the образец of their iris matches компьютерная база данных.

IV. Translate the following into Russian in written form.
Biometrics
Innovation & Technology
Retinal scans. Fingerprint identification. A few years ago these things seemed like something out of a science fiction movie. Today, they continue to grow as important parts of our risk-based approach to security.
Biometric identification allows us to verify a person is who they say they are by using their own unique set of identifiers - whether fingerprints, iris scans or a combination of the two. We continue to test this technology at airports and harbors across the country, allowing us to control access to important facilities.
Task V. Compare your translation with your partner’s.
Task VI. Choose the best translation in class.
Task VII. Read the text “SmartGate” to answer the questions:
How does SmartGate simplify passport control?
What technology is used by SmartGate?
Where is SmartGate used?
SmartGate
SmartGate
gives some travellers arriving into Australia's international
airports the option to self-process through passport control. It uses
the data in the ePassport and face recognition technology to perform
the customs and immigration checks that are usually conducted by a
Customs officer.
SmartGate can be used by Australian and New Zealand ePassport holders, aged 18 or over. It will be gradually opened to other nationalities that have ePassports.
SmartGate is available at Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne and Auckland International Airports. It will be progressively introduced into other major Australian international airports by mid 2009.
