Road transport

A road is an identifiable route, way or path between two or more places. Roads are typically smoothed, paved, or otherwise prepared to allow easy travel. In urban areas, roads may pass through a city or village and be named as streets, serving a dual function as urban space easement and route.

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one location to another. Modes of transport include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline, and space.

The most common road vehicle is the automobile; a wheeled passenger vehicle that carries its own motor. Other users of roads include buses, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. Automobiles offer high flexibility, buses allow more efficient travel at the cost of reduced flexibility, but they are the main source of noise and air pollution in cities. Road transport by truck is often the initial and final stage of freight transport.

Transport plays an important part in economic growth and globalization, but most types cause air pollution and use large amounts of land.

Transport management

The "transport management" theme covers the management of traffic and transport services for all modes, covering both passenger and freight transport. This includes changing the way in which existing transport systems are used and the strategic and tactical management and control of traffic.

Tactical traffic management involves monitoring the actual traffic situation in real-time (including volumes, speeds, incidents, etc.) and then controlling or influencing the flow using that information in order to increase network efficiency, safety, or other objectives.

Transport management measures are mainly divided into traffic information and control and improving public traffic flow. They also involve a wide range of approaches, including increases and reductions in network capacity and changes in the operation of public transport, rail, air or waterborne transport. With an efficient traffic management system the network operator can meet goals set by the politicians regarding traffic levels within the city centre, emission levels, etc.
