Vivien was born on the 5th of November in 1913 in the family of a prosperous businessman who lived not far away from Calcutta. When the girl was 6 she was sent to England to a boarding school. She had been studying there by 1927.

In 1932 Mrs. Holman entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She had successfully joined the British film industry making her debut with a minor role in a comedy about girls entitled “Things are Looking up”. And with this new career came an even more significant change: Mrs. Holman altered the spelling of her name to Vivien. Later she attracted the attention of famed producer Alexander Korda, who placed the actress under the contract to London films. In 1938 Vivien went to the USA on business and was invited to take part in a screen test for the role of Scarlett. There were some big names that had tried for the part. In fact, Vivien got the role as she appeared to be the best one in the audition. . The film became one of the most celebrated in the annals of cinema. Not only did it win The Best Picture during the Academy Awards but also Vivien won The Best Actress. There would be other films and a vast amount of stage work. There was illness too, both physical and emotional, dimming perhaps the body ability, but never the spirit. In 1951 she got her second “Oskar” for the movie “Tram “Desire” ”. Her other roles are to be found in “Lady Hamilton”(1941), “Caesar and Cleopatra”(1946), “the Waterloo Bridge”(1940), “Anna Karenina”(1948). Vivien died of tuberculosis in 1967. Nevertheless, all the movies with Vivien starring are still popular.
