Day off – Thursday

Saint Andrew’s Church, an outstanding monument of the 18th century, was declared a museum in 1968.

The legend about the Apostle Andrew

The hill where the church is located was called “Andrew’s Hill” after the Apostle Saint Andrew. “The Chronicle of Bygone Times” contains an ancient legend about the Apostle Andrew, who traveled around the world and preached. One day he came to the banks of the Dnipro-Boresphenes River and spent a night there. In the morning he said to his followers: “Do you see these hills? On these hills God will spread his grace. A town will appear, and God will raise many churches.” And having blessed the place, the Apostle placed the cross on the mountain. The tradition binds construction of the cross with the location of Saint Andrew’s Church.

Monogram of sovereign

The idea to construct the church originated by the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. She visited Kyiv in 1744, and with her own hand she laid the first foundation stone of the future church on Andriivskyi Hill. Now the monogram of the sovereign is inscribed on the frontons of Saint Andrew’s Church.

The author of the design

The church was originally designed by the famous architect Johann-Gottfried Schedel. But the empress charched her favourite, even more famous architect Rastrelli. The chief architect of the court, Franchesco Bartholomew Rastrelli (in Russia he was called Varpholomey Varpholomeevich), was known for numerous constructions in the baroque style – grandiose palaces and churches in Petersburg, Petergof, Tsarske Selo. But Church of Saint Andrew with its modest proportions is perhaps the most harmonious and picturesque work he left behind.

The builder of the church

Rastrelli was constantly occupied with construction work in the capital. So the experienced architect Ivan Michurin was dispatched from Moscow to take direct charge of the construction of the Church of Saint Andrew. He coped with the task successfully in spite of many difficulties. Many problems arose due to underground streams in the rock of the hill that threatened to wash away the foundation. The architects had to deepen the foundation. As a result, the temple was placed on strong socle in the form of two-story building built by Michurin. The roof of this building acts as a terrace near the church.
