Learner driver Jeff Metcalfe saved the life of his instructor by driving him to hospital after only ninety minutes’ driving experience.
When instructor Richard Browhill had a heart attack in the passenger seat, Jeff had to drive through five miles of city centre traffic.
“There was a lot of traffic so I didn’t have to drive fast”, Jeff said yesterday.”I just have to keep calm and try to remember my first lesson”. Doctors are now telling Richard to find a more relaxing job. But first he’s going to finish Jeff’s lessons – free.
B
Last week a seventy-eight year old pensioner drove the wrong way down the fast lane of the motorway at 30 kph.
Helmut Braun drove past the exit for Baden-Baden on the A5. He realised his mistake twenty kilometres later, did a U-turn and drove the wrong way down the fast lane. Another driver contacted the police, and a police car led him off the motorway.
Helmut had to pay a 1,000 DM fine. He can’t drive for twelve months and after that he has to take another driving test.
C
Julie Harris of Flimwell, Sussex had eleven accidents in her Mini Metro last year. The last one happened a week ago when she was at some traffic lights and someone crashed into the back of her car.
Yesterday she painted the car yellow after reading that yellow cars have fewer accidents.
D
Joan Pendleton from Boston, USA, was amazed to see her neibours drive away with a baby carrycot on the roof of their car – with their new baby still in it.
“We were in a hurry. Ken put the baby on the car roof because he had to open the car door. Then we drove away”, said the baby’s mother, Sandy Bryson.
“We went about a hundred yards down the road and then I turned round to check the baby. That’s when I found that he wasn’t there. I screamed at my husband, ‘Ken, where’s Tommy?’ and he stopped the car”.

68 me des Alpes
Paris
September 9th
Dear John,
Thanks for your letter. I’m sorry I havent been able to write for two weeks, but I’ve had a lot of homework to do. My exams will be in four weeks and I can’t speak French well enough yet.
I’m very glad you want to come to Paris. Will you be able to come soon? I want to show you everything, and I want you to meet all my friends. I’ve made a lot of friends since I came here. You’ll have to speak French because some of them can’t speak English very well. It won’t be too difficult for you, will it? You studied French at school, didn’t you?
How long will you be able to stay? I’ve been able to find a little studio flat. The address is at the top of the letter. It wasn’t easy to find. Flats are difficult to find in Paris. I’ll be able to cook a real French dinner for you! I had to get a flat because the hotel was too expensive for me.
Write to me soon.
Lots of love.
Mary.
