Каждый год у нас в стране проводится свыше 150 международных выставок. Участию российских предприятий и внешнеторговых фирм в международных ярмарках и выставках способствует (to promote) торгово-промышленная палата России (Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry). 11. Read and translate the following text. What is your opinion of the problems discussed in it?

Modern methods of gathering and using information raise some important questions about privacy. Does one have legal rights to personal privacy? And if he does, at what point are his rights invaded?

One of the first cases involving rights of personal privacy had to do with advertising. In 1903, a New York woman named Roberson discovered that her photo was being used to advertise a brand of flour. She sued the milling company, but she lost the case, because at that time, there were no laws protecting personal privacy from such advertising practices. Shortly afterwards, the state of New York passed one of the first personal privacy laws. According to these laws it was considered illegal to use information about a person to advertise a product unless a person gave permission. Soon other states passed similar laws.

However, even today the law cannot tell exactly where one’s rights of privacy begin and end. Very often it takes a court case to decide whether a particular invasion of privacy is illegal or not.

EPISODE 2

A Telephone Call to an Advertising Agency

Secretary: The advertising agency "Protopopov & Co." What can I do for you?

Kuznetsov: Hello. Can I speak to your director?

117

Secretary: I’m afraid Mr Protopopov is not in at the moment. And who is calling?

Kuznetsov: It’s a call from "Smallcrown-St.Petersburg Ltd." I want to get some information about your services. Could you help us? The thing is that we are intending to participate in the coming international fair of Modern Digital Mass Communications. The fair will take place in our city this spring. We would like to carry on an advertising campaign1 beforehand in order to let the business world and potential customers know our products better. What service can you offer us?

Secretary: Well, we are a full service advertising agency2. So tell us what you want and we shall tell you what we can.

Kuznetsov: We would like you to advertise our goods in your specialized magazines, by distributing our advertising materials and through outdoor means. By the way, what places can you recommend for billboards?

Secretary: The choice will depend on how much you are prepared to pay. Advertising in the centre of the city is very expensive. We can also offer you our services in making a TV advertising film about your company’s activities.

Kuznetsov: How much will a TV spot3 cost?

Secretary: Usually it depends upon the time of going on the air4 and the TV Channel. You’d better discuss all these details with Mr Protopopov tomorrow at any time between nine and two o’clock p.m., if it suits you, of course.

Kuznetsov: Then, be so kind as to leave a message to your boss that I’ll be at your office tomorrow at eleven.

Secretary: OK. You are welcome. Goodbye.

At the Fair

Mr McCane: Thank you, Mr Kuznetsov, for showing us round5 your pavilion. Your hardware production has impressed us most and I think we are lucky to have seen your working models in operation.

118

Kuznetsov: I’m happy to hear that. I suggest you shoud also see our booklets, catalogues and advertising materials to get a better idea of the products. We are showing at the exhibition our most up-to-date models incorporating the latest scientific and technological achievements6 in this field.

Mr McCane: What countries buy your products?

Kuznetsov: Our hardware production operates successfully at more than 100 enterprises in different countries.

Mr McCane: We shall certainly buy your hardware equipment. We are planning to send you our enquiry.

Kuznetsov: We are ready to consider your enquiry. By the way, we have already signed several contracts for the delivery of our peripherals and radiophones here.

Mr McCane: We are also planning to sign a mutually advantageous contract7 with you. Let me tell you that your fair is a tremendous success8.

Kuznetsov: Yes, the business community9 has shown a great interest in the fair which will undoubtedly promote and strengthen trade and economic links10.
