Task 1. Read the text and answer the questions below.
Many people think that the secretary is just the girl who does the typing, photocopying and filing. But the truth is, half the bosses couldn’t function without their secretaries. Read Sue’s story and you’ll find that if one has skills or a calling for some occupation, there will always be a chance to realize them.
Sue: "I was 23 when I went to Cosmopolitan as a secretary and I knew the moment I walked through the door that it was going to be right for me. I had to do all the usual secretarial jobs. And at eleven o'clock I made the coffee, and I had to clean the fridge once a month. After eighteen months I began to train as a sub-editor, and then I took time off from work to get my National Certificate - a qualification for British journalists.
After a time, I became features editor on Cosmopolitan, and finally I went to work on the Daily Express. I spent three and a half years there and eventually became editor of the Sunday Express Magazine. It has taken me ten years to get where I am. And now I hire workers myself, I am the boss.
My secretarial training has been very useful. I've never minded doing the boring jobs - and I don't like asking other people to do them for me. If you've been a secretary then you know how important it is to be polite."
Questions:
1. What did Sue do to become the boss?
2. Did she like her secretarial work?
Task 2. Study the job advertisements from Appendix 1 and describe the requirements to the candidates.
Task3. What is an ideal job for you?
Choose a job that would suit the student to your left, and the reason for choosing that job. Tell about it and ask your neighbour if you were right.
