The term “Ukraine ” was first mentioned in the 12th century manuscripts, but the first state on the territory of modern Ukraine was established by the Scythians in the region to the north of the Black Sea. In the 9th century Slavonic tribes inhabiting this territory united to form the powerful state of Kyivan Rus. But in the 13th century Kyivan Rus split into several principalities which were soon conquered by the Mongolian Golden Horde. The Ukrainian people managed to survive and reunite. One of the most famous states established on the territory of Ukraine was the Cossack Republic of Zaporizhian Sich.
The Verhovna Rada passed the Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine on August 24, 1991.
