3.9. Speaking about past events.

  • What did you do yesterday? At the weekend?

  • When did you go on a spending spree last?

  • What did you buy? Were there any special offers?

  • What film did you watch last? What was it about?

  • What book did you read last? Who was it by? What was it like?

Grammar explanation

Past Simple

We use the past simple to talk about things in the past that we see as completed. We often use time expressions with the past simple to make it clear we are talking about the completed past: last, ago, yesterday, in (2000) and others. We can use the past simple to talk about things that happened once, over a longer period of time or happened a lot in the past.

Positive sentences:

I missed my bus this morning.

I worked in a shoe shop for two years after I graduated from university.

I played a lot of tennis when I was younger.

He was out last week.

We were in London last summer.

Negative sentences:

I didn’t watch TV yesterday.

She didn’t pass her exams last week.

He wasn’t there last spring.

They weren’t in a hurry when I saw them.

Questions:
