READING

6.1. Read the text.

At home in a train.

Pat and Ronald Thomas don’t live in a caravan, but their home has travelled more miles than any other house in Great Britain! Their house is made from a pair of railway carriages. They bought the house about ten years ago.

“I didn’t want to live in a train at first,” admits Pat, “but when I saw that this train had a garden with a stream, I just fell in love with it. We bought it from an old lady and she had already done a lot of work on it. But there is a lot left and we are still making improvements.”

Visitors are often surprised to see how spacious the house is. All the dividing walls have been removed, so now the rooms are about fifteen meters long.

Pat and Ronald paid 68,000 pounds for their house. Recently they were offered more than 100,000 for it, but it’s not for sale.

“I’m discovering more and more about the history of this train,” says Ronald. It was built in Swindon between 1855 and 1875. We have been working so hard to make it beautiful that I don’t think we would ever sell it,” he admits. “I hope it will remain in our family forever.”

Jean

We decorated this room when we got married. Most of the things were wedding presents, so we didn’t choose them ourselves. We’ve been married for thirty years, and we haven’t changed very much. We aren’t planning to change anything either. Actually, I don’t like the furniture. And the carpet’s a horrible colour. I’ve never liked it, but it hasn’t worn out yet. I hate throwing good things away. The newest thing in the room is the television. We bought that ten years ago. We’ve looked after everything. I would like a new sofa one day, but I’ll keep this one until it has worn out.

Darius

I really must have the latest gadgets. I love buying new things. I’ve had my phone since last January, and I’ll probably keep it until next January. Then I’ll get a newer model. I don’t keep things for long. It’s a throwaway society. I’ve had loads of computers. I usually change them once a year. You know, the next one will be twice as powerful and half the price! I bought this flat in 2004. It’s great, but I’m planning to move soon. I’d like a bigger place.

Compare two stories. How are these people different? Who do you tend to be like? Tell about the newest and oldest things in your house. Do you agree that it is “a throwaway society”? Are there any things you want to get rid of?

Unit 1

Track 1 (Task 1.14)

K: Do you like opera?

J: No, I hate it. I find it really boring. Why do you ask?

K: Oh, I’m thinking of going to see something at Opera House and I’m trying to find someone to go with.

J: No, sorry. I just think operas go on too long. I can’t sit still for four hours.

K: Never mind. I’ll try someone else.

J: Have you asked Miriam? I think she likes that kind of music.

K: Oh, right. OK. Maybe I’ll ask her. So what kind of music do you like?

J: Lots of things, really. Jazz, pop, Latin music. I love Tilto Lopez.

K: Really? I hate him. All his songs sound the same. I like jazz though. Do you like Louis Armstrong?

J: Yes, he’s OK. I quite like some of his tunes, but I prefer Gato Barbiery.

K: Oh, right. I’ve never heard of her. Who is she?

J: He’s a man. He’s an Argentinian musician. He’s really good. I’ll lend you a CD if you like.

K: Yes, OK. Thanks.

Unit 2

Track 1. (Task 2.14)

Seller: Oriental carpets! Best prices! Genuine oriental carpets…top quality… How about you, madam?

Buyer: Yeah. Nice carpets. How much is this one?

S: Ah, very nice, this one. It normally costs two hundred in the shops. I get them direct from the factory at a very special price.

B: Oh, yeah? How much is it then?

S: You can have it for a hundred and fifty.

B: Oh. That’s too much. Sorry.

S: Wait a minute…for you, special price. A hundred and thirty.

B: Oh, I don’t know.

S: That’s my best price.

B: Mm, I like it. I like the colours, but…

S: Where are you from?

B: Chicago, Illinois.

S: Ah, I’ve got a brother in Chicago. Great place.

B: Yeah.

S: Look. Just for you. A hundred and twenty-five.

B: No…it’s still too much for me.

S: Make me an offer…

B: A hundred?

S: You’re joking! It cost me a hundred.

B: You paid a hundred for it?

S: Yes. This is top quality.

B: Oh. A hundred and ten?

S: A hundred and fifteen for cash. That’s my final price. It’s a bargain!

B: OK, OK, it’s a deal. A hundred and fifteen.

Unit 3

Track 1 (Task 3.15)

V: Hello, Sue! How are you?

S: Oh hi, yes. I’m all right, I guess.

V: You don’t sound very well. Have you been ill? I didn’t see you in class yesterday.

S: No, I know. I’ve just been really busy applying for jobs. I’ve applied to about ten different places and all the application forms are really big. They take a really long time to fill in. It’s awful. I had to finish one yesterday so I could hand it in before the deadline. That’s why I missed class.

V: Wow! I really don’t know what I want to do when I finish. I’m just going to go on holiday and then I’ll think about looking for a job after that.

S: Well, that’s probably quite a good idea. Look at me. I’ve sent off ten application forms and I’ve only had one interview and that was a disaster.

V: Oh dear. What was the job?

S: Accountant.

V: Accountant! You?

S: Yes, why are you so surprised?

V: Well, you are doing degree in biology and you’re terrible with money! You’re always asking to borrow money from me!

S: Yes, OK, but I was good at maths when I was at school, and they said they would give people training. So, you know, I thought I might have a chance.

V: I know, but usually they want people to have some experience of working in business.

S: Ah, yes…well, that was the problem, actually. I told them in the application form I had experience of working for an accountancy company.

V: What, you mean you lied?

S: Well, it wasn’t exactly a lie. My uncle runs an accountancy company and I sometimes worked there in the holidays to get some extra money.

V: Yes, but what were you doing there?

S: Well, OK. I was making tea and posting letters and things like that, but it was an accountancy company!

V: Right, yes. So what happened in the interview?

S: Oh, they asked me some really difficult questions. I didn’t know what to say. It was a bit embarrassing, actually.

V: Oh well, you live and learn. So what else have you applied for?

S: Well, I’ve sent off a couple more for accountancy jobs, one for marketing, three for jobs in drug companies, and the last one was to work in a zoo, but the money is terrible for that one, so I don’t know if I really want that.

Unit 4

Track 1( Task 4.13)

Waiter: Would you like something to drink?

Carl: Yes. Two bottles of mineral water, please.

Track 2 (Task 4.14)

Ellie: I’m really hungry. How about you?

Carl: Yeah…what would you like?

Ellie: mmm, I don’t know… The vegetarian sounds nice…but it’s got mushrooms, and I don’t like mushrooms.

Carl: You can have it without mushrooms. Just ask.

Ellie: Mmm, what are you going to have?

Carl: I always have the same. Hot American.

Ellie: Eugh…that’s too hot for me. Oh, I can’t decide…I like anchovies…

Carl: Well, would you like the seafood pizza? That’s got anchovies.

Ellie: Oh, yes…Oh, no! It’s got prawns.

Carl: You don’t like prawns?

Ellie: No.

Carl: Why don’t you try the Napoletana?

Ellie: Yeah, OK, but without olives.

Carl: Don’t you like olives either?

Ellie: Not mush. And I’d like a green salad with it.

Carl: What about garlic bread?

Ellie: Eugh, no. I hate the smell of garlic!

Carl: Would you like anything to drink?

Ellie: No, water’s fine for me.

Carl: Wouldn’t you like some wine?

Ellie: Definitely not. No alcohol for me. I’m driving.

Carl: OK.

Ellie: No, none for me, thank you.

Waiter: What about you?

Carl: Oh, yes. Some for me.

Waiter: More?

Carl: Yes, a bit more, please. And could you bring me another beer?

Waiter: Sure. No problem.

Track 5 (Task 4.18)

Carl: Phew! That was hot! I’m really thirsty.

Ellie: Here, have some of my water…

Carl: Thanks. Excuse me! Could I have the bill, please?

Waiter: Was everything OK?

Ellie: Yes, very nice, thank you.

Waiter: You’re welcome.

Carl: Do you take American Express?

Waiter: Yes, we do.

Carl: Is service included?

Waiter: No, it isn’t.

Ellie: Wait, Carl…let me pay half.

Carl: No, this is on me.

Ellie: No. Let’s split the bill.

Carl: If you’re sure…

Ellie: I’m sure. How mush is it?

Carl: Um…thirty-seven thirty-five. But I had two beers…

Ellie: Well, that’s about forty with a tip. Here’s twenty.

Carl: Right…here’s my card.

Waiter: Thank you very much.

Unit 5

Track 1 (5.12)

Traveller: Can I check in here for the London flight?

Clerk: WV376? I’m sorry. You’re too late. The flight’s closed.

T: But I’ve got a ticket…

C: The flight always closes thirty minutes before departure/ I’m very sorry.

T: Look, it’s really important…

C: The flight’s boarding now. It’s leaving in fifteen minutes. There’s nothing I can do.

T: Oh no! My brother’s getting married in London tomorrow! I’ve only got hand-baggage…I can run to the gate!

C: No, you can’t. It’s closed.

T: Can I speak to you supervisor?

C: No, I’m sorry, you can’t.

T: I don’t believe it! This is really stupid! I’m going to miss my brother’s wedding. Do you understand?

C: Please, don’t lose your temper, sir. There’s nothing we can do.

T: OK, OK. When’s the next flight?

C: This is the last flight today, I’m afraid. The next flight doesn’t leave until 8.30 tomorrow morning.

T: Tomorrow? When does it get to London?

C: It arrives at 10.30 local time.

T: OK, change me to that flight.

C: Let me check. That flight’s usually quite busy…

Unit 6

Track 1 (Task 6.14)

Conversation 1

A: Hi, I wonder if you can help me with this.

B: What’s the problem with it?

A: I’m not really sure. It’s just not working properly. When you press recorder, the red light doesn’t come on and then, even if it works, the film usually comes out looking very strange.

B: OK. Let me have a look at it…oh, it’s very dirty. How long have you had it?

A: Quite a while now. Maybe four or five years.

B: Right. That’s quite a long time. And when was the last time you cleaned it?

A: Cleaned it? I didn’t know I had to! I’ve never really cleaned it. I don’t know how to do it.

B: Ah-ha! Well, that could be part of the problem. Let’s open it all up and give it a good clean, and see if it makes any difference.

A: OK. Great. Can I leave it with you?

B: Yes, of course. It should be ready later on today, if you want to come back later to collect it.

Conversation 2

A: Hi, thanks for coming.

B: That’s OK. Where is it?

A: Just through here in the kitchen. There you are.

B: Right, OK. And what’s the problem with it?

A: I’m not really sure. It’s making a funny noise when it goes round and I think it’s leaking somewhere because water keeps coming out from underneath here.

B: I see. And how long’ve you had it?

A: Almost four years now and I’ve never had any problems with it before.

B: No, it’s a very good make. They don’t usually break down. Let’s start with the noise. Do you always check there’s no money in your pockets before you put things in?

A: Well…um…I try to, of course, but it’s possible I miss some sometimes.

B: Well, that could be it, then. Sometimes coins get stuck just here and start making a horrible noise. Let’s open this up and have a look, OK? And then we’ll worry about the leak.

Conversation 3

A: So what’s wrong with it?

B: I’ve no idea! I’ve tried turning it on and off, but nothing happens at all. I’ve tried pressing all the buttons here, but they didn’t make any difference. I’ve even tried changing the batteries in the remote control I use with it, but that didn’t help either. I really don’t know what to do.

A: How long have you had it?

B: Just a couple of days. I only bought it last Saturday and the man in the shop told me it was the best brand you can buy. It makes me really angry.

A: OK, OK. Calm down and let’s have a look at it. It’s all connected up OK.

B: I know. I checked all that earlier.

A: It’s very strange. Let’s start from the beginning with it, then. OK. Oh, look – you idiot!

B: What? What have I done?

A: You haven’t plugged it in over here, have you! I’m not surprised it hasn’t been working!

B: Oh no, I’m really sorry. I’ve completely wasted your time, then!

A: Oh well, never mind. You live and learn, I suppose.

B: Yes, maybe…but is really a stupid mistake, isn’t it?

A: You can say that again!
