IX. Use appropriate grammar and vocabulary to make your speech more initiative, convincing, argumentative, emotional, imaginative:

a) modal verbs, Subjunctive Mood, Nominative Absolute Participial Con­structions, One-member sentences, Complex Objects, feel like Ving, keep on Ving etc.

b) Sayings and proverbs.

Actions speak louder than words; Appearances are deceptive; A word is enough for the wise, A man never discloses his own character so clearly as when he describes another’s (Richter) etc.

c) Idioms of Comparison.

As clear as crystal – used of water, e.g. a pool, the sea at a shallow point. It can also mean ‘obvious’ when referring to a situation, problem, etc.

As clear as the nose on your face – this means ‘obvious’, easy to recognize or see through, e.g. a situation, someone’s intention, etc.

As cold as ice – used of things, substances, people’s hands or fingers, etc. also of the temperature of a room

As dry as a stick; as dry as a bone, as dry as dust – these three are used of a substance, e.g. soil, sand, etc. The first is used of a thirsty person. The third is used to describe a boring book, speech, etc.

As easy as anything, as easy as ABC, as easy as pie – these three are used of a task or problem which is easy to accomplish or solve.

As fair as rose – used of a beautiful woman, in poetic style.

As fat as butter, as fat as a pig – there two are used of a fat person. The first is more complimentary than the second.

As good as gold – used of a well-behaved child, or an orderly person.

As greedy as a dog, as greedy as a pig, as greedy as a wolf – there three are used of a person who eats more than he needs.

As gruff as a bear – used of an ill-tempered person.

As hot as fire – used of the heat or temperature of something or of someone’s face, cheeks, etc.

As keen as mustard – used of a person who is very critical and exact in his expectations or demands on others. It also means “eager to do sth”.

As merry as a cricket – used of a person’s mood or personality.

As quick as lightning – used of a person. It can refer to a physical action, e.g., running, or to a mental process, e.g., seeing through a problem or situation.

As regular as clockwork – used of actions and things which happen regularly, or to persons who do things regularly.

As silent as the dead; as silent as the grave – these two are used of a person, or a thing, or a place.

As tough as nails – used of a person with a strong will.

As white as a sheet – used of the color of the face of a person who has turned pale after a shock or fright.
