The seasons
The year is divided into for seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In spring nature awakens from its long winter sleep. The trees are filled with new life, the earth is warmed by the sunrays and weather gets gradually milder. New shoots of grass come out and the fields and the meadows are covered with fresh green grass. The woods and the forests are filled with the songs of the birds coming back home. The sky is blue and cloudless. The air is fresh and transparent. Everything looks fresh and joyous. At night millions of starts shine brightly in the darkness. When summer comes the weather gets warmer still and sometimes it is very hot. The days are long and the nights are short and warm. Sometimes the sky is suddenly overcast with low black clouds and a distant growl of thunder indicates the approach of a thunderstorm. There is a storm with thunder, lightning and hail. Anyone caught in the rain takes shelter, other vise he may get wet to the skin. Summer is the farmer's busy season - he works in the fields from morning till night. The grass must be cut and the hay must be made while the dry weather lasts. Autumn brings with it the harvest time, when the crops are gathered in and the fruit is picked in the orchards. The days get shorter and the nights longer. The woods turn yellow, brown and crimson, leaves begin to fall from the trees, and the ground is covered with them. The skies are grey and it rains very often. Autumn is the season of mists, of windy days, of biting winds, of beautiful sunsets and miserable chilly days when it drizzles. Then most birds migrate to warm countries.
A spell of sunny weather in late September or early October is called Indian Summer.
When winter comes, we are obliged to spend more time indoors because out of doors it's cold. On a frosty morning everything is covered with hoarfrost. We may get fog, sleet and frost. Ponds, lakes, streams and rivers are frozen. Icicles hang from the roofs of the houses. The snow falls, but sometimes it doesn't last long. The roads are sometimes covered with slippery ice or deep snow. The trees are bare. Bitter northern winds have stripped them of all their leaves. By and by the thaw sets in the snow melts very quickly and turns to slush, which is splashed with mud by passing cars. There are four seasons in a year and I like them all, for each of them has the beauty of its own.

Our country Russia
Our country, which is called the Russian Federation is one of the largest countries in the world. It lies both in Europe and Asia. The shortest distance from west to east is more than nine thousand kilometres, and the shortest distance from north to south is more than four and a half thousand kilometres. Russia is bounded by twelve countries on land, and it is washed by three oceans. The largest seaports are Murmansk, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok. The Baltick Sea coast is a popular place for people who prefer to spend their holidays at the seaside.
The climate of our country differs from one part to another. The eastern part of the country is warmer in summer than the western part, but the winter is much colder in the east. Some northern and southern parts are very cold or very hot. Some parts of the country are covered with mountains and hills. Large regions in the north, in the south and in the east are not very good for man and few people live there. It is difficult to develop agriculture and industry in these regions, but many young people go there to build new towns, factories, railways and canals. Russia has many rivers. Twenty of them are more than one thousand kilometres long. They flow into seas or oceans carrying ships and boats to large and small ports to develop new industrial centres. Russia is divided into territories and regions. Then there are autonomous republics, autonomous regions and national areas. All nationalities of our country differ from each other, they speak different languages, but all people have equal rights. All nationalities of Russia speak proudly about the industrial and agricultural development of their republic or national area. They are especially proud of cultural progress: all children go to school; besides, there are institutes and universities. Many famous people work in national republics.
Russia is a great industrial country. We produce heavy machines, agricultural machines, airplanes, lorries and cars, tractors, refrigerators, railway carriages, ships and boats, TV and radio sets. These are only a few examples of the products which factories send to all parts of Russia and to other countries. Today the country has a developed agriculture.
Washington.
Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It has been the seat of the American government since 18Q0. George Washington, the first American president, chose the place where the city now stands to build the capital, and the city was named after Georges Washington. Washington has a lot of interesting things to see and it is difficult to find a park, a square or an open area there without a monument or a memorial. The best-known ones are the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Washington has many other famous buildings and monuments- the Library of Congress, the Capitol, the National Gallery of Art and others. The Capitol rises in the centre of city. Not far from the Capitol is the Library of Congress, which is the largest library in the USA. The National Gallery of Art is one of the finest picture galleries in America. The White House is the home of the president. Tourists usually see only one, the smaller part of Washington- its north-west district, where rich people live. They are not the slums. Washington has always been the place of working people" s demonstrations. They come to the capital to protest4 s against unemployment, and to take part in demonstrations against war, or for their rights.
Theatre and cinema
Theatre is a wonderful combination of arts. Cinema is a marvelous invention of the 20th century. At theatre people can see dramas, tragedies, comedies, operas, ballets, puppet-shows and other performances. Many great playwrights in the world wrote plays which were staged at theatre all over the world. In England the greatest of them vas William Shakespeare (1854-1615). He wrote 37 plays. Many of them, namely “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Hamlet” and others are being staged in many countries even today. Later on in the 19th century two other playwrights became famous – Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) and George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950). Even now people greatly enjoy G. Shaw`s play “Pygmalion” with is very famous popular in many countries. At the same time in Russia many theatre in different cities and towns stage wonderful plays written by Gogol, Ostrovsky, Chekhov and many, many other authors of the past. At our marvelous opera and ballet theatre – the Bolshoi in Moscow and the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg people can listen to wonderful operas and see brilliant ballets. Up to now Tchaikovsky`s operas and ballets such as “Eugene Onegin”, “Sleeping Beauty” and Musorgsky`s opera “Boris Gogunov”, have been a great success in our country and abroad.
The USA
The United States of America is the 4th largest country in the world after Russian, Canada. It occupies the central part of the North American continent. The United States of America is a federal republic, consisting of 50 states including the states of Alaska and Hawaii. Outlying areas include Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and the US Virgin Island. The northern boundary is partly formed by the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence River, the southern boundary is partly formed by the Rio Grande. United States also has a sea-border with Russian. The total area of the United States (including the District of Columbia) is about 9, 809, 000 sq km. The country is washed by 3 oceans: the Arctic and the Pacific. The longest of them are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Columbia, the Rio Grande and some others. On the US territory there are mountains and lowlands. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada. The highest peak, Mount McKinley, its located in Alaska.
ILYA REPIN
Ilya Repin is one of the most outstanding Russian artists. Repin was born in the town of Chuguyev in the Ukraine into the family of an officer in 1844. He showed his passion for painting in his early childhood therefore he was sent to the art school by his parents. In 1864 Repin entered the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Five years later he graduated from the Academy brilliantly. He god acquainted with I. N. Kramskoi, who noticed his talent, and joined Kramskoi`s “Petedvizhniki”. Among their members there prominent artists: Surikov, Perov, Makovskiy, Polenov, Sevrasov, Vasnetsov, Levitan and others. This society played an important role in the painters` development. When Repin`s picture “Barge-Haulers on the Volga” was exhibited, it brought him fame and recognition. The painter exposes the oppression of people, showing their powerful forces and spiritual beauty of Russian people. We can see barge-haulers pulling a barge up the river. They are exhausted by the inhuman labour. Repin devoted some paintings to the historical events of Russia, - for example; “Princess Sophia at Novodevichy Monastery”, “A Religious Procession in Kursk Gubernia”, “Ivan thy Terrible and his son Ivan on November 16, 1581,”, “Unexpected Return” and others. People can`t help admiring these wonderful canvases.
MASS MEDIA
The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views. Of course, not all newspapers and TV programmes report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and provide us with reliable information.
It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren't interested in ordinary events. That is why there are so many programmes and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn't usually make headlines. Bad news does. Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people's private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed?
The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it's much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers. Still, many people prefer the radio. It's good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house. Newspapers don't react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information. The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.
