9. Вы собираетесь сделать доклад о стране изучаемого языка. Посоветуйтесь с учителем, какую тему выбрать, как подготовиться к докладу, узнайте, сколько времени на него отводиться.

  • Good morning, Olga Michailovna! Are you very busy just now?

  • Not very much. Why?

  • I`m going to make a report on British culture, but I haven1t yet decided what aspect to choose. I`m sure you can help me.

  • It depends on what you personally are interested in.

  • Oh, I`m into music ( sport, painting) I`m keen on...I`m interested in...

  • Then why not choose...

  • I think it will be great but where can I find any material for my report.

  • You can go to the library, surf the Internet. Besides I can give you some books ( articles) on the subject.

  • I`ll be very gratefull to you, O. M. What is the time limit for the presentation?

  • Usually speakers are given 7 or 10 minutes for a presentation.

  • Shall I read or speak?

  • You`d better speak and if you use any visual aids it`ll make your presentation more spectacular.

  • Thank you very much for your advice.

  • You are welcome. I wish you every success with your report.

10. Вам позвонил зарубежный друг. Он хочет, чтобы вы встретили его в аэропорту. Спросите, когда и каким рейсом он прилетает, где хотел бы побывать и что увидеть в вашем городе.

- Hello!

- Could I speak to ..., please? It`s ... speaking.

- Oh, is that you... How are you getting on?

- I am fine. I`m calling to tell you I`m arriving in Russia next week.

- Wow! When exactly are you coming?

- On Tuesday.

- What is the number of your flight?

- Flight 221, it arrives at Saratov airport at 2.30 p.m. Could you meet me at the airport?

-Sure, don`t worry about it. And how long are you going to stay with us?

- 10 days. It is enough to get a good idea of Saratov.

-What would you like to see?

-All those sights you wrote about in your letters.

-OK. We`ll make a tour of Saratov and you`ll see all our tourist attractions. How about making a trip up or down the Volga?

- It`s a good idea!

11. Вы в гостях у своего зарубежного друга. Вместе с ним вы хотите записаться в спортивную секцию. Обсудите, каким видом спорта заняться и почему, согласуйте с ним, по каким дням вы будете заниматься спортом.

-As far as I know British people are said to be very sporty. What about you? Are you into sports?

- No, I `m not. But I`ve been thinking of joining a sports club.

-That`s a good idea! What sport are you going to do?

-I haven`t decided yet. May be a team sport. Any ideas?

- As for me I`d like to practice a national British sport like football, rugby or cricket.

- Are you sure? Cricket is such a boring game. A match may last a few days.

- Why not choose rugby then? It`s a team game and it`s really dynamic.

- And there is a rugby team in our school. I will ask the coach if you could train with us.

- Great! On what days do they have workouts?

- 3 days a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

- That suits me perfectly.

  • I say... I have decided to improve my speaking and listening skills in English.

  • Have you? How are you going to do it?

  • I`m going to take English classes. I have already called some language schools but haven`t yet chosen one to get enrolled.

  • If you want my opinion learning foreign languages is waste of time.

  • Why do you think so?

  • I see no point in learning foreign languages. All instructions and manuals are to be translated into Russian and you can choose any language on a DVD player.

  • But it is also better to read a book in the original or to listen to film characters speak their mother tongue. Besides I`m going to be a computer programmer and it is impossible without proficiency in English.

  • You don`t say so. All computers are provided with an electronic interpreter.

  • Our teacher says if you want to be misunderstood make use of this device.

  • If you don`t trust modern technology you can always find a professional interpreter.

  • I`m afraid you don`t understand me. I want to travell to other countries, to interact with people who live there, to feel at home in Western Europe, Africa, Asia, any part of the world. I don`t want to be dependent on anyone, to feel helpless without an interpreter. And if I fell in love with someone who speaks English and decided to go out on date with him\her. Should I take an interpreter with me?

  • Er, mm. You have called some language schools, could you give me the number?
