2.1. Read and translate the text:

We study at the State University – Education-Science-Production Complex (State University-ESPC), the former Orel State Technical University. Our university takes its beginning in 1954 as an educational (training) and tutorial station. Now it is one of the largest higher schools in Orel.

Today there are several institutes and faculties in our University, for example, Institute of Architecture and Construction, Transport Institute, Institute of Finance and Economics, Institute of Law, Technological Institute, Training-Science-Research Institute of Information Technology, Faculty of Food Biotechnology and Commodity Research, Faculty of New Technologies and Automation Production, etc. The University has several buildings for training and laboratory works, a computer centre, a scientific and technical library, a canteen, two hostels, a camp for physical recreation and sports and a health centre.

Our University trains specialists, Bachelors and Masters for different branches of national economy. Experienced professors and tutorial staff train them.

The academic year begins as a rule at the beginning of September and ends in June. The academic year has two terms: the autumn term and the spring term. Each term ends with credit tests and examinations, which take place in January and June.

We go to the University every day except Sunday. Usually we have three or four lessons a day. We attend lectures, seminars and tutorials (practical classes) regularly. Classes at our University begin at a quarter past eight in the morning and are over at ten minutes past three in the afternoon.

In the first and second years of studies we take a foreign language – English, German or French, general engineering subjects such as technology of materials, technical drawing, descriptive geometry, strength of materials, machine elements, and theoretical mechanics, some other special subjects as well as higher mathematics, physics and chemistry. We study also philosophy, the Russian History and Culture of Russian Speech.

Professors and tutorial staff carry on research in different fields of science and technology. The results are put into practice. Many students also take part in research work. Some seniors and post-graduates make reports on their researches at various conferences held in our university and in other higher schools of the Russian Federation. Our best students take part in different Olympiads and win in them.

We have two holidays a year: winter holidays and summer holidays. During the holidays some students go to the camp for physical recreation and sports, which is situated not far from Orel in the forest near a pond. Our University provides excellent opportunities for sport, cultural and other activities.

The students study at our University four or five years. At the end of the training course all graduates prepare their diploma projects or defend a thesis. Those graduates who have keen interests in research are recommended for further study at post-graduate courses.

After graduation from the University its graduates work in different joint stock companies, private firms and other organizations.

I like to study at our University. It gives good opportunities to get well-paid job.
