Try to Answer the Questions
Above and beyond the daily bread-and-butter activities of your life, you should find answers to questions as the following:
Since the nature of life is to win some and lose some, how can I enjoy my life continuously? Could it be that I cause my suffering instead of its being caused by the people and situations around me? Is it necessary to keep at least some of my inner thoughts hidden from other people? How have I closed myself to the teachings that my life is continuously offering me? Is it possible to handle the daily situations in my life without worrying? Do I create problems, or they are thrust upon me by the outside world? How can I love people and be close to them without being caught up in their predicaments? Should I express my anger, or soft-pedal it so as not to disturb other people? Does the secret of happiness lie more in learning how to change my response to life than in changing the people and situations around me to fit my expectations? How can I love people all of the time – no matter what they do or say? How do I create my feelings of insecurity? Why is it that I have such difficulty in finding the “right” person with whom to live my life? Could it be that I am perfect – but I am not enjoying my life because of inappropriate programming that has been conditioned into me? Are there methods that will enable me to free myself from this inappropriate programming? – or am I trapped for the rest of my life?

The Key to Open-Mindedness
When we really understand the significance of the fact that we don’t know all about anything, it is easy to acquire habits of open-mindedness.
For instance, if you didn’t know all about something, there would be no sense in keeping an open mind. There would be no need to listen to what anyone else had to tell you or to keep you eyes open in surveying the territory. Nothing would be new to you. Everything you planned would work out perfectly because your knowledge would be complete and have complete predictability! You would be justified in refusing to listen to what others had to say, and you could forever renounce surveying the territory for new or different ideas.
We have all heard speeches on the desirability and the necessity of keeping open minds – but we are seldom told how to do it. The way to get and keep an open mind is to repeat to yourself: “I can’t know all about anything. No one else knows all about anything. Therefore, I have no right to close my mind. I must watch for important facts that may have been overlooked. Some hidden factors may be found that will help me make my knowledge adequate.”
