A grinding machine, often shortened to grinder, is a machine tool used for grinding, which is a type of machining using an abrasive wheel as the cutting tool. Each grain of abrasive on the wheel's surface cuts a small chip from the workpiece via shear deformation. All of the many types of grinding machines use a grinding wheel made from one of the manufactured abrasives, silicon carbide or aluminum oxide. The wheel is manufactured by mixing selected sizes of abrasive granules with a bonding agent (such as clay, resin, rubber, shellac, or silicate of soda) and fusing them together by baking or firing. The grade (hardness) of a wheel is determined by the ratio of bond to abrasive.
The grinding machine consists of a power driven grinding wheel spinning at the required speed (which is determined by the wheel’s diameter and manufacturer’s rating, usually by a formula) and a bed with a fixture to guide and hold the work-piece. The grinding head can be controlled to travel across a fixed work piece or the workpiece can be moved whilst the grind head stays in a fixed position. Very fine control of the grinding head or tables position is possible using a vernier calibrated hand wheel, or using the features of numerical controls.
Grinding machines remove material from the workpiece by abrasion, which can generate substantial amounts of heat; they therefore incorporate a coolant to cool the workpiece so that it does not overheat and go outside its tolerance. The coolant also benefits the machinist as the heat generated may cause burns in some cases. In very high-precision grinding machines (most cylindrical and surface grinders) the final grinding stages are usually set up so that they remove about 200 nm (less than 1/100000 in) per pass - this generates so little heat that even with no coolant, the temperature rise is negligible.

Шліфувальні верстати призначені для обробки деталей шліфувальними кругами. На них можна обробляти зовнішні і внутрішні циліндрові, конічні і фасонні поверхні і площини, розрізати заготовки, шліфувати різьблення і зуби зубчатих коліс, заточувати ріжучий інструмент і т.д. Головним рухом у всіх шліфувальних верстатів є обертання шліфувального круга, окружна швидкість vK якого вимірюється в м/с. Існують наступні рухи подач. Залежно від виду використовуваного інструменту та способу його застосовування шліфувальні верстати розподіляються на такі основні групи: стрічкові, дискові, барабанні та комбіновані.
На стрічкових шліфувальних верстатах використовується шліфувальна шкурка у вигляді суцільної стрічки, натягнутої на два або три барабани. Вони також розподіляються на верстати з нерухомим столом і з рухомим столом.
На дискових шліфувальних верстатах використовують шліфувальну стрічку у вигляді листа, закріпленого на торці диску. Ці верстати бувають з одним або двома дисками. В Україні такі верстати виготовляються тільки з одним диском.
На барабанних шліфувальних верстатах працюють шліфувальною шкуркою, закріпленою на боковій поверхні циліндра.
Комбіновані шліфувальні верстати є комбінацією з декількох вищезгаданих типів верстатів.
