Lawyers and attorneys serve both as advocates and advisors. Lawyers' individual job descriptions depend greatly on their expertise, training, and position in a firm. Some lawyers practice in court more often than others. They become trial attorneys or litigation attorneys who specialize in trial work and represent clients in a lawsuit.
Their daily responsibilities include interviewing clients, giving legal advice, performing legal research, arguing motions before a judge, and drafting legal documents.
The majority of lawyers practice in criminal or civil court. Criminal attorneys represent persons charged with committing some crime. Corporate attorneys, or transactional lawyers, advise and negotiate business transactions, draft transactional documents, counsel clients, prepare materials to governmental bodies, perform legal research, draft a variety of legal documents including contracts, and trust agreements. Corporate lawyers work on "deals" not on "cases" and advocate in board rooms.
