Northern Ireland

1. Northern Ireland is situated in the North-East of the Ireland and occupies 14.121 square kilometers. It is only one-sixth part of the whole Island. Northern Ireland is called Ulster. New Ulster comprises 26 counties – local government districts. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The population is some 1.5 million people. Two-third of the population are Protestants, the rest – Catholics.

2. Education in Northern Ireland is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 15. The educational system is essentially similar to that of England. In the early 1990s Northern Ireland had nearly 1100 primary schools, annually attended by approximately 191,000 pupils and staffed by more than 8200 teachers. Secondary and special schools numbered about 275 and were attended by about 147,000 students taught by 10,300 instructors. The country has two universities: Queen's University of Belfast (1845) and the University of Ulster (1984).

3. Three basic industries – agriculture, textiles and ship- building – form the economy of Northern Ireland. Agriculture (predominantly livestock and meat products) is still the single most important branch of economy. Other industrial activities include the manufacture of aircraft, textile machinery and a wide range of engineering products, tobacco and clothing.

4. Northern Ireland was an important center for textiles though this branch of industry is in decline. Most of Northern Ireland’s trade is with or through Great Britain and that accounts for the concentration of the population and industry on the eastern seaboard close to Great Britain.

5. Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is the leading industrial center of the region. The prominent role of Belfast is due to its advantageous geographic situation vis-a-vis (относительно) Britain. As a result Belfast became one of the largest ports of Great Britain.
