Great Britain is a highly developed industrial country. It is known as one of the world`s largest proucers and exporters of iron and steel products, machinery and electronics, chemicals and textile, aircraft and navigation eqipment. One of the chief industries of the country is shipbuilding.
Great Britain is a country with old cultural traditions and customs. The most famous educational centres are Oxford and Cambridge universities. They are considered to be the intellectual centres of Europe. The education is not free, it is very expensive.
The United Kingdom is a monarchy and the Queen is the head of state. But in practice it is ruled by the elected government with a Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. There are three main political parties in Great Britain: the London, the Conservative and the Liberal parties.

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and commercial centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. Its population is about 8 million.
London is situated on the river Thames. The city is wery old. It has more than 20 centuries old history. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different from each other.
The city is the oldest part of London, it's financial and business centre. Numerous banks, offices and firms are concentrated there.
Westminster is the aristocratic official part of London. It includes Buckingham Palace where the Queen lives and the Houses of Parliament stretching for nearly 1000 feet along the north bank of the Thames.
The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. It is a symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parkland houses are situated there. English aristocracy lives in this region.
The East End is an industrial district of London. There are many factories and the Port of London there. The region is densely populated by working class families.
9. The Pepublic of Belarus. Geographical position and industry.
The Republiс of Belarus is a small, beautifull country with the heroic past and difficult present. It is situated in Eastern Europe. The Republic borders on Russia, the Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. It has an area of 207,600 square kilometres and a population of more than 10 million. 77 per cent of the population constitute Belarusians, 64 per cent live in cities, the largest of which are Minsk (the capital), Gomel, Brest, Vitebsk, Grodno and Mogilev. The climate in the republic is moderately continental, the breathing of the Baltic sea is constantly felt here.
During World War II Belarus suffered greatly. It lost more than half of its national wealth. The fascists killed every fourth person living there. But despite all this, Belarus has restored its cities, rebuilt its economy. Modern Minsk is a city of numerous plants and factories, modern buildings, tree-lined streets. Beautiful parks and gardens. It is also a big traffic centre with a large network of railways, roads, airlines and two Metro lines.
Minsk has a highly developed industry. Agriculture specializes in milk and meat production. The main crops cultivated here are potatoes, flax, grain, herbs and vegetables.
