1. Do you think mass media play an important part in the of the society?

Mass Media become a very important part of our life. The press, the radio and television play a big role in the life of the society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. As sociologists say news is not what happens, it is what you see or read about it in mass media. In other words, mass media plays a very important role in organizing public opinion. Millions of people watch TV and read newspapers in their free time. Most of people can’t do without a newspaper in the underground or during the lunch break. TV also dominates the life of the family most of the time. It is also a habit which impossible to resist. The radio is turned on most of the time, creating a permanent background noise. In fact it does not interfere with your activities. I can easily listen to the radio while doing my homework, cooking or washing the dishes. It’s no secret that some of the TV and radio stations are owned by big corporations, so the owners can advertise whatever they choose Commercial firms have to buy TV and radio time to advertise their products. Most of the new inventions and technologies become popular and well known with the help of mass media. Thus mass media promotes quality and progress in our everyday life. Of course advertising promotes business and benefits businessmen. And very often the advertising annoys people.

2. Is television a blessing or a curse and a time waster?

Television is an essential part of people’s lives. It’s a wonderful source of information and one of the best ways to spend free time and not to feel bored. Television’s viewing is the most popular leisure pastime. It’s not surprising, because TV channels show a great variety of programmes: documentaries and current affairs programmes, feature films and comedies, soaps and police series, concerts and talk shows.

Television is a reflection of the modern world. It gives you an opportunity to travel all over the world, to see different people and learn about their customs and traditions. Television keeps you informed about the rest of the world. And of course, it helps to escape from everyday problems.

But there are programmes which contain a lot of violence. According to researchers, there is a direct link between violence on TV and the horrifying new crimes among the young. Many young people imprisoned for committing violent crimes report having imitated crime techniques watched on TV.

We are already beginning to forget what the world was without television.

Television encourages passive enjoyment. We become content with second-hand experiences. It is so easy to sit in our armchairs watching other working. Little by little, television cuts us from the real world. We get lazy.

3. Do you agree that television has a negative influence on children? Is there any positive influence?

Television has both good and bad points. And people should learn how to make the best use of it.

‘Television and its effect’ has been one of the most debatable topics for a long time, which seems to have come to no conclusion. While some people believe that watching TV has more advantages than disadvantages, there are others who contradict this belief. Children are amongst the most faithful or loyal TV audience till date. Teenagers may stop watching TV and adults may have no time for it, but children can never be ruled out. They are amongst the most dependable viewers of the idiot box.

It has been known that the first 2 years of a child's life make up the most vital phase for the development of his brain. Too much of TV can restrict the natural exploration that a child's mind engages in and also curb his interaction with parents and siblings. It also works against learning and healthy, physical and social development. If a child is addicted to the small screen from a very tender age, it can hinder his growth, in terms of action and behavior. He might become less physically active, stop doing his homework, shy away from playing and even spend less time with family.

Positive Effects Of TV On Children

Preschoolers can learn the alphabets, colors and numbers from television. Children can get information on wildlife and expand their knowledge with quiz contests and others games on TV. With television, children can keep a track of the latest happenings and the current events. Television comes across as an excellent form of entertainment for kids, in the form of cartoons and kids programs.

Negative Effects Of TV On Children

Children who watch TV for more hours are more likely to be prone to overweight problems. The aggressiveness and violent acts shown on TV can create an apprehensive outlook in a child, about the world as a whole. It is said that children learn bad habits much faster than the good ones. If a child sees people smoke and drink on screen, he might end up adopting the same habits. Television can instill the concepts of racial discrimination and gender differences in the mind of children, from a very tender age. Advertisements influence the eating and drinking habits of children. They might get encouraged to eat unhealthy, especially high calorie foods and drinks.
