Tasks

1. Read one of the stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer or William Shakespeare and write down 10-12 sentences about the plot of them. (Use text-book 6 –pp.5-17)

2. Answer the questions:

1) What was Beowulf? Why did he become famous?

2) Who occupies the central position in Middle English literature?

3) Why do we consider Chaucer to be the innovator in literature?

4) Prove that he was very close to the culture of Renaissance.

5) What language became the basis of the English literary language?

6) What does the word “Renaissance” mean?

7) What period in the development of the English literature do we call ‘the golden age’? Why?

8) How many periods is Shakespeare’s literary career divided into? What are they? What are their characteristic features?

9) What phrases from Shakespeare’s works have become idioms? Give examples.

10) Do you know the life story of William Shakespeare? Inform your group-mates about the most significant events in his life.

3. Give the Ukrainian equivalents of the following English words and expressions:

4. Does the speaker agree that Caesar was ambitious? What examples does he give to prove his point of view?

5. What relations were there between Caesar and the speaker? Prove it with the words from the passage.

7. Learn the passage from Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” by heart.

8. Do you know the following words and word combinations?

6) Which of Byron’s lyrical poems were translated into Russian by Lermontov?

7) What was Scott’s historical approach to life?
