LVIV

1. Lviv is one of the most remarkable towns in Ukraine. It was founded in the middle of the 13-th century by Prince Daniil Galitsky and named in the honour of his son Lev. The town was constantly assaulted by Tartar-Mongol hordes, Polish, Hungarian, and Lithuanian invaders. During its seven-hundred-year old history, Lviv has been a centre of political and military struggle. It has survived hundreds of fires, scores of wars, sieges and assaults. Many a tale lies buried within the walls of ancient buildings. Glory and valour, humour and gaiety, grief and tragedy came and went in its past.

2. The city occupies an area of 111 km². It lies on the watershed of the Dniester and the Vistula, on the eastern slope of the Carpathians.; Its climate is continental. The population is about a million people.

3. Now Lviv is an important industrial and cultural centre. It produces buses, TV sets, automatic cranes, motor bicycles, electronic tubes and household lamps, shoes, knitted wear and confectionery.

4. There are many theatres, museums, monuments, parks, gardens and boulevards in Lviv. It is a town of students and scholars. Over 50000 students study at about a dozen of higher educational establishments. The State University of Lviv named after Ivan Franko is one of the oldest in Last Europe. Founded in 1661 the University is a huge complex of scientific establishments including a computer centre, botanical gardens, observatories (astronomical and geophysical), an agro-biological station in the Carpa­thians, a geological centre on the Dniester and museums of paleontology, zoology, soil science, etc. The University has an excellent scientific library, a publishing house, and a printing shop.

5. Such is the general outline of the complex history of Lviv, one of the most beautiful and original towns of the country.
