7. Read the following English proverbs. Pay attention to the rules of reading.

  1. A good beginning makes a good ending. –Лиха беда начало.

  2. A good name is better than riches. – Добрая слава лучше богатства.

  3. A hard nut to crack. – Орешек не по зубам.

  4. All is well that ends well. – Все хорошо, что хорошо кончается.

  5. An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening. – Утро вечера мудренее.

  6. As the tree, so the fruit. – Яблоко от яблони недалеко падает.

  7. First think, then speak. – Молвишь – не воротишь.

  8. Great cry and little wool. – Шуму много, а дела мало.

  9. He laughs best who laughs last. – Хорошо смеется тот, кто смеется последним.

  10. He who pleased everybody died before he was born. – На всех не угодишь.

  11. Let sleeping dogs lie. – Не буди лиха, пока спит тихо.

  12. Out of sight, out of mind. – С глаз долой – их сердца вон.

8. Some English and Russian proverbs are common and can be translated word by word from one language into another. For example, "There's no smoke without fire" has the Russian equivalent "Нет дыма без огня". With others, the meaning of the proverb can be expressed in different ways. For example, "Once bitten, twice shy" can be expressed in Russian by "Обжегшись на молоке, будешь дуть и на воду" or "Пуганая ворона куста боится". There are some English proverbs below. See if you can match them with their Russian equivalents.
