Как пользоваться англо-русским словарем
Поскольку слова в словаре расположены в алфавитном порядке, что относится не только к первой букве слова, но и ко всем последующим, то поиск слова в словаре включает несколько этапов:
1) открыть словарь на той букве, с которой начинается слово;
2) открыть страницу, где начинается вторая буква слова;
3) затем нужно искать по алфавиту третью букву и т.д. Но вот слово найдено. Теперь нужно выяснить, какая часть речи вам нужна. Например, repeat может быть глаголом — значит, надо смотреть обозначение v (verb глагол), или существительным — -тогда значения даются после обозначения п (noun существительное). Но этого тоже недостаточно, так как слова многозначны (например, словарь проф. В.К. Мюллера дает пять значений для существительного repeat и семь значений для глагола repeat). Для того чтобы выбрать правильное значение слова, надо решить, какое из них соответствует контексту, откуда оно взято.
Но главное, прежде чем приступить к поиску слов в словаре впервые, необходимо ознакомиться со статьей «Как пользоваться словарем», открывающей любой словарь.
§ 7. Характерные аффиксы основных частей речи существительные
Имена существительные бывают простые, не имеющие в своем составе ни префиксов, ни суффиксов (a school школа, a book книга, a chair стул), и производные, образованные от других частей речи с помощью суффиксов или префиксов или одновременно и. того и другого (a teacher учитель, childhood детство, injustice несправедливость, unemployment безработица).
К наиболее характерным суффиксам производных существительных относятся:
-er (-or, -ar): driver шофер, водитель, worker рабочий, actor артист, sailor моряк, liar лжец, beggar проситель, нищий
-ary /-ery /-ory: library библиотека, fishery рыболовство, laboratory лаборатория
-ant (-ent): assistant ассистент, помощник, servant слуга, student студент, учащийся
-ist: scientist ученый, typist машинистка
-ment: government правительство, agreement соглашение
-tion /-sion /-xion: education образование, confusion смущение complexion цвет лица
-(at)ion: formation образование, resignation отставка
-аnсе (-еnсе): importance важность, absence отсутствие, presence присутствие
-age: baggage багаж, mileage расстояние в милях
-al: arrival прибытие, burial захоронение
-ity /-ty: activity активность cruelty жестокость
-ness: happiness счастье, kindness доброта

Имена существительные почти не имеют характерных префиксов. Префиксы существительных в основном совпадают с префиксами глаголов и прилагательных, от которых образованы существительные: reconstruction (от глагола to reconstruct) реконструкция, disarmament (от глагола to disarm) разоружение. Некоторые имена существительные образуются из двух и более слов, составляющих одно понятие: classroom класс (классная комната), newspaper газета, commander-in-chief главнокомандующий, man-of-war военный корабль.
Многие существительные по форме совпадают с другими частями речи, например с глаголами:
answer ответ — to answer отвечать
dream мечта — to dream мечтать
end конец — to end кончать(ся), завершать(ся)
hope надежда — to hope надеяться
work работа — to work работать
Такие слова можно отнести к той или иной части речи в зависимости от общего значения и их роли в предложении.
