It is a diverse multi-cultural community which provides a unique opportunity for multidisciplinary interaction at all levels of pharmacy and a wide range of services and facilities.

Faculty of Pharmacy

The Faculty of Pharmacy at The University of Sydney was the first in Australia to award a degree, and has an established tradition of research and scholarship in the pharmaceutical sciences. Research is carried out under the leadership of the professors of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice. In addition there are:

Academic staff (21).

Research only staff (15).

Postgraduate students enrolled for the research degrees of PhD, MPharm, or MPharmSc (40).

Students studying for the Graduate Diploma in Hospital Pharmacy,

BPharm Honours degree or Graduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences (12).

Students enrolled in the Master of Pharmacy (Clinical), a new part-time degree (30).

Professional officers (3), technical / laboratory staff (7), a computer officer and administrative / ancillary staff (6), support the research activities.

Research Links

Since the Faculty is now located in the College of Health Sciences the opportunities for collaboration have increased. Much of the research work is already multidisciplinary, and the staff take advantage of the opportunities for collaboration found within the departments of Engineering, Medicine, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmacology and within the teaching hospitals of The University of Sydney. In addition, opportunities are provided for collaboration with other institutions in the Sydney metropolitan area, such as other universities in the region, The Heart Research Institute, Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation and Australian Technology Park as well as the pharmaceutical and herbal medicines industries.

Research Facilities

The Faculty of Pharmacy is well equipped with the following research facilities:

  • specialist laboratories for all common methodology used in pharmaceutical technology, drug sciences, chemical synthesis, cell culture and molecular biology;

  • Mass Spectrometry and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance facility with state of the art equipment;

  • laboratories for chemical, biological, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis;

The strengths of our graduate program include a core of research-intensive faculty directing cutting-edge research programs, excellent graduate students, a top-ranked University, and strong collaborations with scientists on-campus as well as in the Research Triangle (Duke University, North Carolina State University, Glaxo Wellcome, Inc., National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Environmental Protection Agency, Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology, etc.)

Where

We’re

Going

Graduate degrees in the School of Pharmacy are offered as part of an "umbrella" pharmaceutical sciences program. Ph.D. programs are offered in emphasis areas of Drug Delivery and Disposition, and Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products. In addition, M.S. and joint Ph.D. programs are offered with the School of Public Health in the areas of Pharmacoeconomics and Pharmacoepidemiology. The largest academic unit in the School of Pharmacy, the Division of Pharmacotherapy, offers extensive postdoctoral training, but does not currently enroll students in a graduate degree program.

Admissions Criteria:

Admission to our graduate program is a selective process. In general, over the last several years, successful applicants have achieved combined scores of greater than 1150 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for the verbal and quantitative sections, and have average grades of B or better (GPA>3.0).

In addition, for international applicants, unless English is your first language, or is the language used in much of your studies, as in India, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a requirement. A total score of 550 or higher is required, with a minimum grade of 50 on each of the three sections of this test. The average score for new students admitted in 1998 was over 600.

Expenses and Funding:

Currently the University estimates the cost of graduate study at UNC as approximately $24,150 per year for a nonresident student. Awards for teaching assistantships, as well as research assistantships, are given on an extremely competitive basis based on the availability of positions and fluency in the English language. A typical assistantship will cover the student's tuition and provide an additional stipend of $15,000 per year.

How to Apply:

Application forms must be obtained from the UNC Graduate School. The application may be completed on-line, or you may download the forms from the Graduate School web page (http://www.ais.unc.edu/sis/admissions/grad/adm.html) to complete a printed copy if you have web access.

If you have additional questions, please contact Sherrie Settle, Administrative Director for Graduate Education and Research.
