Exercise 4.

• Translate the following derivatives (похідні слова) into Ukrainian paying attention to suffixes and prefixes:

existence, humankind, universality, meaningful, comparative, unified, synonymously,

self-improvement, structurally, effortless, hunter, gatherer, refinement, indivisible (divide – розділяти)

• Translate into English using prefix in-(im-) and suffixes -ity, -an, -er, -ed, -able:

покращення, науковий, цивілізований, нецивілізований, колективно, безумовний, передача

Exercise 5.

• Translate into Ukrainian the following word combinations (A+N and N+N type):

cultural studies, community values, lifelong learning, library and information science, local community, living culture, museum studies, academic (навчальний, науковий) field

• Translate into English:

наукова школа, людське суспільство, артефакти культури, цивілізована поведінка, порівняльна культурологія, сучасна (contemporary) наукова думка

• Transform the following word combinations.

Examples: an adult (дорослий) show  a show for adults; a history book  a book about history.

a love story, art history, cultural evolution, human communities, a cultural studies researcher

Grammar The Passive Voice

Basic Patterns:

Postgraduates are expected to write their PhD (doctoral) thesis. Від аспірантів очікують, що вони напишуть дисертацію на звання доктора філософії.

In Great Britain, some sociologists were influenced by Marxism. У Великій Британії деякі соціологи підпали під вплив марксизму.

Other groups were looked down upon as barbarians. До інших груп ставилися з презирством, вважаючи їх варварами.

She was being paid two hundred dollars a week. Їй платили двісті доларів на тиждень.

• Translate the following sentences into Ukrainian. Explain why you think your translation is correct:

The words 'culture' and 'civilization' have been often used synonymously.

A lot of articles have been written on this topic.

A culture is transmitted to the next generation by learning.

• Translate into English:

На конкурсі представлені 32 країни (nations).

Тут будується новий культурний центр.

Легенда – це розповідь, що передається з покоління до покоління.

Phrasal Verbs (дієслова типу get up, come along, look out, go on)

Basic Patterns:

Culture and civilization are often mixed up in people's minds. Люди часто плутають поняття “культура” і “цивілізація”.

There was very little light, just enough to make out their faces. Світла було дуже мало; його вистачало лише на те, щоб розпізнати обличчя.

Do you eat out a lot? Ти часто обідаєш в ресторані?

• Translate the following sentences into Ukrainian. Explain why you think your translation is correct:

The actress comes out, says hello to her audience, picks up her guitar and begins to play.

It is always possible to look up a word or term in an Internet dictionary.

It’s time for you to give up smoking. Ancient (старовинні) customs and traditions are handed down from generation to generation.
