6. Somebody suggests playing party games. Do you ...

a) suddenly remember a previous engagement?

b) feel embarrassed, but join in anyway?

c) suggest your favourite game and organise it?

KEY:

1 a=1 b=2 c=3 2 a=2 b=3 c=1 3 a=1 b=3 c=2

4 a=3 b=1 c=1 5 a=2 b=1 c=3 6 a=3 b=2 c=1

What it means:

  • if you scored between 6 and 10: you are definitely the life and soul of any party.

  • if you scored between 11 and 14: you could afford to let your hair down occasionally (relax and enjoy yourself, especially after working hard.)

  • if you scored between 15 and 18: you obviously like the quiet life – but you don’t have to take everything so seriously.

10. Complete as many of these sentences as you can from memory, using one word in each of the gaps. Compare your sentences with a partner. Are the sentences true for you? Discuss with a partner.

a) My philosophy is 'you only ____ once', so ____ sure you______ good time'.

b) When I want to _____ an invitation, I sometimes say that I've got a _____engagement, even if it's not true.

c) I'm not very good at going up to strangers and ________ myself.

d) Even when I'm not looking forward to going out, I usually end _____enjoying myself.

e) From time to time, I really enjoy an evening at home ____ my own.

11. Think of a good party you've been to or one that was a disaster. You are going to tell your partner about it. Choose from the list the things you want to talk about. Think about what you will say and what language you will need. Tell your partner about the party.

Whose party was it? Did you know most of the people there? What was the occasion? What sort of food and drink did you have? Did you take a gift for the host? What was the music like? Who did you go with? Did you dance? Where was the party? Did you meet anybody nice there? Were there any decorations? What time did it finish? Were there a lot of people there? Did you stay to the end?

12. Work in groups. You are going to take part in a competition to organise the best party. Tell the rest of the class about your party. Try to convince them to come. Decide on the following:

• budget • formal or informal dress • date and time • decorations

• who to invite • entertainment (music, fireworks, etc) • place • food and drink

13. Listen to the song and see what the relationship between the party hostess, Johnny and Judy is? Listen to the song again and read the lyrics. In each line of the three verses there is an extra word. Find the word and cross it out.

Chorus

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to,

Cry if I want to, cry if I want to.

You would cry too if it happened to you.

Verse 1

Nobody really knows where my Johnny has gone,

But Judy left at the same time.

Why has he still holding her hand,

When he's supposed to be all mine.

Chorus

Verse 2

Play all of my records, keep dancing all night,

But just leave me alone for a while,

'Til Johnny's back dancing with me,

I've got no more reason to smile.

Chorus

Verse 3

Judy and Johnny just walked in thru' the door,

Like a queen walking with her king.

Oh, what a birthday party surprise

Judy's wearing his ear-ring.

Chorus

14. Match the letters of invitation to the replies.

1. Dear...

Thanks for the invitation to dinner, I'd love to come. I haven't seen Brett and Alison for ages and your friend sounds really interesting. I'll bring some wine. Look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Love

2. Dear ...

It was great to hear from you. Sorry it's taken me a while to reply, but I've been up to my eyes in work recently. I'm pleased to hear that you're having such a good time at college and that you've made loads of new friends. David sounds nice. Three weeks? That must be a record for you!

I'm writing to ask you what you're doing for the last weekend in May. I was wondering if you'd like to come down here and spend a few days by the sea. How about bringing David with you? (Can he cook?!) Please try to come. I'm really looking forward to seeing you. Write soon and let me know.

Lots of love xxx

3. Dear ...

Thank you for your kind invitation to your wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, I won't be

able to pin you as I'll be abroad on holiday. I hope the party goes well.

Best wishes for a happy anniversary on the 4th.

Love PS Give my love to Uncle Ken.

4. Dear ...

Thank you for inviting me down for the weekend, but I'm afraid I've got exams the following week, so I won't be able to make it. I'd love to come another time, though. Maybe after my exams. I'll give you a ring and we'll fix a date.

Wish me luck for my exams. Love

5. Dear ...

I hope you're well and that you're enjoying your new job. I'm writing to you because we would like you to join us for a small party to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary on 4th September at the Ferncourt Hotel.

I do hope you can come. Please drop us a line to let us know. Love

6. Dear …

This is just a short note to ask you if you could come to dinner next Saturday. I’m sorry it’s such short notice, but an old friend of mine phoned me yesterday to say she’s coming for the weekend, and I’d love you to meet her. I think I’ve talked to you about her. Her name’s Justy and she works for a film company in Spain. I’m going to ask Brett and Alison too. I do hope you can make it. Love
