Word – building

  1. Form words by means of:

  1. the suffix – less and translate them into Ukrainian:

color, taste, father, home, sleep, use, hope, help;

  1. the suffix – ful and translate them into Ukrainian:

power, insight, truth, use, peace, wonder;

  1. the suffix – able and translate them into Ukrainian:

to drink, to read, to eat, to understand, to speak, to obtain, to value, to work, to suit;

  1. Translate the following words paying attention to the suffixes and prefixes:

difference, substance, importance, constituent, important, subsequent, transparent, ability, gravity, property, discovery, organic, specific.

  1. Analyze the following words. Underline the suffixes and state what part of speech they belong.

  1. differ (відрізнятися), different, difference;

  2. insist (наполягати), insistent, insistency;

  3. urge (спонукати, підганяти), urgent, urgency;

  4. attend (приділяти увагу), attendant, attendance;

  5. assist (допомагати), assistant, assistance.

Gerund in Scientific English

  1. Read non-finite forms expressing simultaneousness of action:

solving, going, having decomposed, translating, having obtained, composing, determining;

being consumed, having been substituted, being involved, being occupied, having been included, having been described, being recognized;

  1. Read non-finite forms with passive meaning:

providing, having reacted, having been modified, being expressed, accelerating, having been indicated, requiring, being determined.

  1. Translate the following:

  1. Girls like being looked at. Students don't like being asked. Do you like writing or being written to? She likes reading and being read to;

  1. Choose the correct forms:

  1. Translate the following sentences paying attention to the ing-forms:

1. His work resulted in solving many problems. 2. The experiment resulted in finding new properties of this material. 3. The meeting resulted in coming to an agreement on this problem. 4. The discussion resulted in the test being made again. 5. His being ill resulted in our not having made the experiment. 6. I. Newton's having formulated this law was of great importance. 7. His having solved this equation is quite natural. 8. Associating geometrical objects with real numbers is the basis of arithmetization of analytical geometry. 9. Using symbols in mathematics is customary. 10. Regarding the state of rest as a limiting condition of motion is including it under the general concept of motion.
