KEY CONCEPTS

metalanguage

A form of language or set of terms used for the description or analysis of another language.

rule-based (logic programming)

The study or implementation of computer programs capable of discovering or checking proofs of formal expressions or segments.

bilingual/parallel corpus

It is a corpus that contains a collection of original texts in language L1 and their translations into a set of languages L2 ... Ln. In most cases, parallel corpora contain data from only two languages. Closely related to parallel corpora are 'comparable corpora', which consists of texts from two or more languages which are similar in genre, topic, register etc. without, however, containing the same content. Parallel corpora can be bilingual or multilingual, i.e. they consist of texts of two or more languages. They can be either unidirectional (e.g. an English text translated into German), bidirectional (e.g. an English text translated into German and vice versa), or multidirectional (e.g. an English text such as an EU regulation translated into German, Spanish, French, etc.).

target language

The computer language, often a machine language, into which a document written in another computer language is to be translated.

source language

The language from which a translation is to be made or from which a word is borrowed.

! Study the following: Translation is not a mere word-for-word substitution.

The important thing to remember in a compound noun (i.e. two nouns put together) is that the second noun I the real noun. The first is used like an adjective to describe what kind of thing or person the second noun is. There is no simple rule to tell you when the two parts of a compound noun are written together, with a hyphen or separately. You must learn the written form every time you learn a new compound noun.
