1. Read the following explanations and translate the underlined words into Russian.
To deteriorate means to develop into a bad or unpleasant situation, to become worse. Relations between the two countries have since deteriorated.
A resource is something such as land, minerals, or natural energy that exists in a country and can be used to increase its wealth. Russia is reach in natural resources.
To contaminate means to make a place or a substance dirty or dangerous by adding something to it, for example, chemicals or poison: fears that dumped waste might contaminate water supplies.
To disperse means to spread over a wide area: The clouds dispersed quickly.
Extinct – an extinct animal, plant, language etc no longer exists: Dinosaurs have been extinct for many years.
Emission means 1) an amount of gas or other substance that a machine or factory produces and sends into the air: Britain has agreed to cut emissions of nitrogen oxide from power stations. / emissions of CFCs 2) the sending out of gas, heat, light etc.
To exhaust means 1) to make someone extremely tired so that they have no energy left: Their long conversation exhausted him. 2) to use all of something: We’ve nearly exhausted our coal reserves.
To threaten means 1) to say that you will cause someone pain, unhappiness, or trouble if they do not do what you want: Every time they quarrel, Jan threatens to leave. 2) to be likely to harm or destroy something: Poaching threatens the survival of the rhino.
Inhabitant means one of the people who live in a particular place: a city of six millions inhabitants.
Litter means bits of waste paper, containers etc that people have thrown away and left on the ground in a public place: Please, take your litter away with you. Syn. Garbage, rubbish, trash.
To affect means to do something that produces an affect or change in someone or something: a disease that affects the central nervous system.
To derive means 1) to get something, usually a pleasant feeling, from something or someone: He derived some comfort from the fact that he wasn’t the only one to fail the exam. 2) to develop or come from something else: This word is derived from Latin. 3) technical to get a chemical substance from another substance.
Pollution means 1) the process of making air, water, soil etc dangerously dirty and not suitable for people to use: California’s tough anti-pollution laws/ chronic pollution of the atmosphere 2) substances that make air, water, soil etc dangerously dirty: industries and other sources of pollution / a national programme to cut sulphur dioxide pollution.
