ROBERT STEPHENSON

Robert Stephenson, the son of George Stephenson was a British civil engineer. He is mostly well-known for the construction of several notable bridges.

He was born in 1803. He was educated in Newcastle and at the University of Edinbu

rgh. In 1829 he assisted his father in constructing a locomotive known as the Rocket. Four years later he was appointed construction engineer of the Birmingham and London Railway. It was completed in 1838.

Stephenson built several famous bridges. They are the Victoria Bridge in England, the Britannia Bridge in Wales, two bridges across the Nile in Egypt and the Victoria Bridge in Montreal, Canada.

In the days of technological progress when people build millions of houses the problem of architecture is not an easy problem. Our homeland is a large territory. The housing problem is a difficult problem.

Some people say that they do not like the style of modern architecture with its too simple lines. They say that modern buildings look like big boxes and that all of them have the same face.

The style of modern architecture is certainly specific. Modern buildings are simple in construction and economic in time and money. It helps to do away with the housing problem. Fortunately architects think more and more about beauty of houses they build.
