Grammar exercises The Verb. Active Voice.

I. Use the Present Simple or the Present Continuous instead of the infinitives in brackets:

  1. My fellow-student (to have) a lecture now.

  2. He always (to have) lectures on Friday.

  3. Who (to write) a test in the next room?

  4. The teacher (to hold) an exam. He usually (to hold) exams in room 22.

  5. The professor (to give) a lecture. He always (to give) lectures in English.

  6. - Who are you waiting for?

- I (to wait) for my tutor. I need his help.

7. Don’t go out! It (to rain) heavily.

8. I hope, you (to understand) the use of the Present Simple and the Present Continuous quite well.

9. - What are you writing?

- I (to make) notes about the two present tenses.

10. I often (to meet) my fellow-student at the corner of this street.

11. My brother (to go) in for sports.

12. We (to get) books from the library now.

13. This student always (to answer) well and (to get) excellent marks.

14. The teacher (to ask) the new grammar rule.

II. Use the Present Simple, the Present Continuous or the Present Perfect instead of the infinitives in brackets:

1. - Will you, please, lend me your text-book? I (to leave) mine at home.

- I (to be) sorry, but I (to read) it now. Ann (to have) such a book, she can give it

to you.

2. I (to pass) just my exams.

3. My friend always (to make) mistakes in his test.

4. Our students (to be) proud of their Institute.

5. He (to make) up his mind to master English.

6. His sister (to make) a report on History now.

7. She (to send) me a letter that she (to come) in a few days.

9. - What are you looking for?

III. Use the Present Continuous or the Present Perfect Continuous instead of the infinitives in brackets:

1. - What are you looking at?

- I (to look) at the picture over there. I (to look) at it for almost half an hour and I

still can’t understand what it is.

2. - What is Mary doing?

- She (to learn) English words by heart.

3. She (to learn) since 12 o’clock. I think, she must have a rest.

4. Here you are at last! I (to look) for you everywhere.

5. - Why are you smiling, Robert?

- I (to watch) your kitten.

6. I see you (to write) letter all the morning. I hope, it is the last letter you (to write)

now.

7. You (to sit) here for a long time. Are you waiting for anybody?

8. She (to study) English for three years.

9. I (to make) my report since Monday. Now I (to write) the conclusion.

10. Mary’s mother (to rest) in the garden all day, because she is ill.

11. She (to sleep) for ten hours! You must wake her.

12. David (to wash) his hands. He just (to repair) the TV-set.

13. It’s 6 o’clock. I (to wait) for Ann for half an hour.

14. I (to try) to learn English for year, but I (not to make) good progress yet.
