The Possessive Case of Nouns
(Притяжательный падеж существительных)
Притяжательный падеж обычно обозначает принадлежность и отвечает на вопрос «чей?». Он образуется путём прибавления к слову апострофа (') и окончания -s.
The woman's dress — Платье женщины
Dickens's novels — романы Дикенса
Притяжательный падеж существительных во множественном числе (с окончанием -s) образуется только с помощью апострофа ('):
The students' books — книги студентов
Но: the children's books
Мы ставим «'s» в этом случае, потому что слово -children- не имеет окончания -s во множественном числе.
Притяжательный падеж имеют:
1) одушевлённые существительные
* Неодушевлённые существительные образуют несогласованное определение с предлогом -of-. Например:
The man's hand.
The roof of the house.
2) местоимения, заменяющие одушевлённые существительные: somebody, anyone,
each other, everybody, ...
It's nobody's business.
3) существительные, обозначающие время:
a month's holiday — месячный отпуск
two minutes' pause — двухминутная пауза
4) существительные, обозначающие расстояние:
a mile's distance — расстояние в одну милю
5) слова today, yesterday, tomorrow:
yesterday's paper — вчерашняя газета
Притяжательный падеж употребляется также для выражения какого-либо места (магазин, дом, салон и т.д.):
at the dentist's, at the butcher's, at the hairdresser's, at my uncle's ... .
Притяжательный падеж в английском языке также может употребляться с неодушевлёнными существительными типа — moon, sun, world, earth, river, country, city, а также с названиями стран, времён года, месяцев и дней недели: the city's population, London's buses, the sun's rays, July's heat, etc. Если имеется в виду посвящение чего-либо кому-либо, то притяжательный падеж не употребляется: the Kennedy Centre, the Pushkin Museum.
