7. How to Book a Plane Ticket for a Dog

So you're about to take a long trip and you can't bear the thought of leaving your dog at home or in the care of someone else. Don't fret. With today's airlines, dog travel is just another part of the friendly skies! Here are a few tips to help make their trip and yours a little more enjoyable!

Instructions

  • 1 Determine your schedule. Depending on your travel plans, it is important to determine if you are at all flexible with your dates. If your dog is smaller than twelve pounds the dog gets to travel with you in the cabin, but most airlines will not allow more than two dogs in the cabin. If there are already dogs or cats booked on the flight, then you might have to re-arrange your travel schedule a bit.

  • 2 Surf the web. Find the flight that best fits your travel needs based on price and schedule. However, DO NOT BOOK THE TICKET! When traveling with the dog you must speak with the airline directly. You cannot use their website as there is no way to secure a plane ticket or travel voucher for your dog.

  • 3 Call the airline. Once you've found the ticket that makes sense for your travel, call the airline and book the ticket. Be sure to mention that you will be traveling with a dog. Once you determine the airline's policy when it comes to size of dogs they allow in the cabin, you will be able to determine if your dog can ride with you.

  • 4 Buy the ticket. Whether your dog is riding with you or in excess baggage (a pressurized lighted cabin) there is usually an additional fee involved which you will have to pay.

  • 5 Go to the vet. Almost every airline will require a travel certificate from your vet that states the dog is up to date with his vaccinations. These are usually relatively cheap, five to twenty dollars. But they are a necessity. If you show up without one, your dog will most likely not make the flight.

  • 6 Arrive early. For those new to the experience, traveling with a dog can be a bit overwhelming. Arrive at the airport early, giving yourself plenty of time to make sure your dog makes the flight, has enough time to go to the bathroom and get a snack and some water before boarding the plane.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some vets will prescribe a light tranquilizer to help your dog sleep during the flight.

  • Provide extra old blankets to help your dog stay warm if flying excess baggage or cargo.

  • If your dog is traveling baggage or cargo, consider buying the liability insurance. While it is rare, dogs have been known to become injured or pass away. Without insurance (which is offered for an additional fee through the airline), your dog may not be covered.

8. Tsa Carry on Rules for Prescription Drugs

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is the government agency in control of implementing and enforcing security measures for airlines and airports, including what items are allowed to be carried or checked onto a flight. With the restriction in liquids allowed to be carried on, implemented in August 2006, it can be confusing what are you are are not allowed to bring with you. These rules are implemented to ensure the safety of all passengers. Liquids

  • While liquids are generally limited to 3.4-oz(100-ml) bottles or less, in clear, plastic containers, liquid medications are the exception to the rule. In terms of medications, travelers with a medical condition or disability may carry on liquids, gels, water or juices. There is no limit to the amount or volume of these types of liquid medications. However, if the liquid is contained in something larger than 3 oz., or is not contained in a 1-quart, zip-top plastic bag, (such as medication needed by diabetics) then it must be declared and inspected by a TSA security officer. This even includes over-the-counter drugs needed for medical purposes including eyedrops and saline solution.
