Transient conditions
A transient condition in an electric drive is such as occurs when a change is made from one steady state of operation to another and when the speed, torque, and current undergo certain changes.
A transient operating condition in an electric drive may arise either due to a sudden change in load of the system, or following some intentional control action such as start-up, braking, reversal of the direction of rotation, etc.
Investigation into the transient operating conditions of electric drives is of great practical importance.
Study of transient operating conditions as well as the influence upon them of different electrical and mechanical parameters such as, say, voltage, resistance, reactance, inertia, etc., is essential for correct selection of the methods of control and the design of the control and power circuits.
Transient processes are of short duration and any change in the thermal condition of the electric drive will usually have no significant influence on the other forms of processes involved. By reason of this, the study of the nature of transient operating conditions in electric drives that follows below will disregard the thermal condition of the electric drive motor.
As transient processes are related to the dynamic behaviour of the drive motor and the driven machine, consideration should be given to the fundamentals of electric drive dynamics.
2. Listen to the text “Transient conditions” and try to understand it.
3. True or false statements:
1. A transient condition in an electric drive is meant intentional change of the drive speed to a value needed for performing the required work process.
2. Voltage, resistance, inertia influence upon to the transient operating conditions.
3. Investigation into the transient operating conditions of electric drives is of great practical importance.
4. Transient processes are related to the dynamic behavior of the drive motor and the driven machine.
5. Transients in electric drives are characterized by short-time mechanical, electromagnetic and processes.
Listen to the text once again and answer the following questions:
What is a transient condition?
When mayatransient operating condition arise?
Transient process is related to the dynamic behavior of the drive motor and the driven machine, isn’t it?
Why are transients in electric drives characterized by short-time mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal processes?
