V. Read the following information about the history of the University and complete the multiple choice test below

The history of the Ivan Franko University in L’viv begins in 1608, when a Jesuit secondary school (Collegium) was founded in L’viv. On January 20, 1661 the Polish King Jan Kazimierz II signed the Diploma granting the Jesuit Collegium of L'viv "the honour of the Academy and the title of the University". This was the second higher educational establishment in Ukraine (the first was the Mogila Academy in Kyiv).

In 1772 Halychyna became a part of the Austrian monarchy. The Society of Jesuits was disbanded and the University of L'viv was closed. Only in October 1784 a Diploma was granted to the University administration by the government of Kaiser Jozef II. The Diploma decreed the four faculties: Philosophy, Law, Medicine, and Theology.

In 1848 the Department of the Ukrainian Language and Literature was set up by Ya. Holovats’kyi, an outstanding Ukrainian scholar. In 1849 he was appointed Rector of the University.

In the 70s of the 19th century Ivan Franko, a distinguished Ukrainian scholar, public figure, writer and translator, studied at the Philisophy Faculty of the University.

Such prominent figures of Ukranian national Rennaissance as Markiyan Shashkevych and Yuriy Venelin (Huts) were connected with the University of L'viv. Among other famous personalities who studied at the University at the turn of the the 19th and 20th centuries were M. Pavlyk, O. Terlets'kyi, V. Navrots'kyi, O. Makovei, J. Puzyna and others.

In 1894-1914 an outstanding historian and creator of the national school of History, Professor M. Hrushevs’kyi headed the Chair of Ukrainian History at the University. Later he became the first President of Ukraine.

In 1923 ownership rights over the premises of the former Sejm of Halychyna were transferred to the University as its main building.

In 1947 the University Publishing House was launched. In 1989 it begun to function independently under the name of the "Svit" Publishers.

From 1951 to 1963 the University was headed by Professor Ye. Lazarenko, a prominent scholar in geology, Academician of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Ukraine.

The most prominent University scholars were awarded the highest titles of Corresponding and Acting Members of the respective Academies, among them I.Krypiakevych, V.Sobolyev, O.Parassiuk, Y.Pidstryhach, I.Yukhnovs'kyi, V.Panassiuk, R.Kucher, M.Brodin, Y.Fradkin. Well-known Ukrainian authors such as R. Bratun', D. Pavlychko, R. Ivanychuk, R. Fedoriv, V. Luchuk were once University students here.
