Pin-Up появился в начале ХХ века, когда для рекламы и календарей начали использовать нарисованных красавиц, которых поначалу просто перерисовывали с фотографий или даже просто раскрашивали снимки. Родоначальником пин-апа принято считать компанию Coca Cola, которая первой в качестве рекламных журнальных иллюстраций просто перерисовывала откровенные фотографии женщин того времени.

Pin-up, от англ. to pin up — прикалывать, то есть плакат, прикалываемый на стену — изображение красивой, часто полуобнажённой, девушки в определённом стиле. В русском языке употребляется для обозначения конкретного стиля американской графики середины XX века, тем не менее, термин имеет более широкое значение — тиражируемый образ секс-символа.

Само название Pin-Up произошло благодаря водителям-дальнобойщикам, которые обклеивали свои грузовики страницами с красивыми девушками. Дословно "pin up" - прикалывать. В русском языке часто употребляется для обозначения конкретного стиля американской графики середины XX века.

Расцвет Pin-Up пришелся на 30-е, когда девушки завоевали обложки журналов. Причем девушки, зачастую, с содержимым журнала не имели ничего общего. Но коллекционеры и любители были готовы покупать такие журналы уже только из-за обложек.
