Целью данного практикума «Ecology Basics» является развитие у студентов навыков профессиональной устной речи по специальности «Экология», и стимулирование познавательной деятельности студентов, наряду с систематизацией изученного ранее материала.
Практикум содержит аутентичные тексты, написанные современным английским языком, информативные и насыщенные специальными терминами.
Данное издание состоит из пяти частей, каждая часть содержит текст, сопровождаемый пред- и послетекстовыми заданиями. Предтекстовые задания направлены на решение лексических и грамматических задач. Задания послетекстового этапа носят речевой характер и направлены на развитие навыков и умений профессиональной устной речи.
Предназначен для студентов II курса очного отделения биологического факультета (английский язык).
Печатается по решению редакционно-издательского совета Сургутского государственного университета.

Unit 1. Ecology & environment
1. Read the following quotes. What are they all about?
«Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man».
Stewart Udall.
«We need a new environmental consciousness on a global basis. To do this, we need to educate people».
Mikhail Gorbachev.
«What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another».

– Do you know any of these people whom these quotes belong to? What are they famous for?
– What quotes do you agree with? Disagree? And why?
– What science deals with the topics mentioned in these quotes?
– How would you define the term «ecology»?
– What words (associations) come into your head when you think of «environment»? With your group-mates and the help of your teacher build a word map.

Now use the word map as a prompt and write your own definition of the word «environment». Then compare your definitions and find out the most accurate one.
2. Find in the text and write down the words that you can understand without translation (I.E. International words; for example, biology …).
3. Read the words, find the Russian equivalents and write them down:
a) Environment, term, conservation, pollutant, air/water pollution, to affect, to interact, animals, plants, distribution, properties, abundance, study, branch, interrelation, cell, community, species, influence, population.
b) Клетка, загрязняющее вещество, окружающая среда, растения, охрана/сохранение, термин, изучение, загрязнение воздуха/воды, воздействовать, животные, сообщество, популяция, отрасль, влияние, вид (биол.), свойства, взаимоотношение/ взаимная связь, распространение/ распределение, численность, взаимодействовать.
– Look through the text and see if there are any other useful words that can be added to this vocabulary on the topic «Ecology and Environment». Write them down. Share your findings with your fellow-students.
– Now use any of these words to make up three true sentences on the topic Ecology and Environment. Write them down.
4. Read the following words, define their parts of speech with the help of the suffixes they are formed by; translate the words and write down the translation.
Model: recently (-ly – суффикс наречия); overpopulation (-ion – суффикс существительного).
Pollution-pollutant-to pollute; survival-survivor- to survive; racial-race; conservation- conservationist- to conserve; really-real; cultural- culture; science- scientist-scientific; organization- to organize; behavior- behavioral- to behave; adaptation- to adapt.
5. Read the following English word combinations and supply the Russian equivalents:
More sophisticated citizens; with the dawning awareness; more menacing to survival; to creep into everyone’s lexicon; to give much greater coverage; to turn a concerned eye on; in the broadest sense; our way of living; living beings; to draw heavily; as a broad science; because of its focus on the higher levels of the organization of life.
6. Translate the verbs underlined in the text «Ecology». Pay attention to the tenses used.
E.g. are talking- говорим. Вспомогательный глагол are указывает на настоящее продолженное время, активный залог, множественное число.
7. Read the text «Ecology» and translate it using a dictionary.
